Doctor Who eps 1 and 2 review (or 2 & 3 since I think they want to count the Xmas special as number 1 this year for some reason)

THIS THREAD MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS (obviously) Space Babies Quite barmy but good traditional Who fun. A bit lore-heavy at the start but I guess that’s to be expected as this is supposed to be a kind of soft reboot. Not sure I liked The Doc randomly breathing life into a butterfly at the start. It can be explained away with leftover Artron (regeneration) energy, but if this was the case we would have seen some orange glow-y business as is the precedent. It’s not the kind of thing RTD would overlook since he invented that as a plot device, so possibly an indication of something being markedly different character-wise. Ruby was acting weird, the way certain lines hit felt majorly off-base, and I guess The Doctor was the same as well. Not sure what order they were filmed in but it does take an episode or two for them to find their feet usually. It felt more significant than that though, idk. The Devil’s Chord Very solid episode. I liked the storyline, I LOVED the villain, and I liked the Beatles.the resolution was kind of dumb though, some generic chord that The Doc just so happens to guess because blah blah vague reasons. This whole era is seeming to play out like a comic book or fantasy show, with god-like beings that can poof things in and out of existence, ‘consume’ ‘music’ from inside people etc and that music manifests itself physically as strings of notes that the villain can then manipulate. There’s also the second musical number of the series here, which is as big a flag as any that all is not what it seems. Once is a quirky RTD-ism, twice is a deliberate message. There are all sorts of theories going around online regarding the show as appearing very much as a ‘show within a show’, with the characters appearing to hear the background music and other fourth wall breaking moments, but I won’t go into them here because they’re mere speculation at this point and people always read far too much into every single minor reference, gag or in-joke.

 • I liked them both although if I were to make any criticisms, I'd say that the "twist" musical number seemed a bit unnecessary and would've liked to see/hear more from the Beatles.
