It's my understanding that the Fallen were rather late to the party on Venus and that the collapse and the destruction of the academy and the rest of our colonies on Venus was mostly due to the Vex and the Fallen arrived later to pillage what was left. I may be wrong though

No, that's about right actually.... The vex where the main problem on Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter etc... The hive took the moon as a staging ground for Earth... We did something to stop the vex after the converted Mercury, stopping the transformation of Mars and Venus... The fallen came to Earth, the moon, and Venus, seeking to salvage our tech, the Cabal invaded an unoccupied Mars while running from something... You are correct, I apologize...
