If you voted yes, no, or kinda, comment below why or why not it is or is not "earning". After seeing so much controversy on this subject I want to see what some people have to say, you are all entitled to your opinions so have at it Guardians!!!

2-3 strikes for something is NOT earning it.
-
Edited by Dagoth: 2/19/2015 12:43:50 AMYou earned those strange coins through weekly heroics, so why can't it?
-
I just thought: exotics are the "rarest" in the game... However, i can garuntee that you see more exotics than commons every game you play... Just a thought...
-
When I do a nightfall and some guy gets the gally and I get 11 -blam!-ing strange coin then yes, I earned whatever xur is selling
-
Getting an item from a random number generator, no matter how much time you invest in generating numbers randomly, is not earned. Won, yes. Earned, no. Saving your coins and buying an item with them is definitively earning something.
-
Doesn't matter. Fact is that xur wrecked this game because he made it easier for everyone to obtain what are supposed to be the most rare gear in the game.
-
If you purchase a car, did you really earn it?
-
It's the same as saving a pay check and buying something you want.
-
yes for you have to earn the coins to buy them from him. it takes time to get them and get enough where as getting things from the raid or nf or mission is rng and not guaranteed. where as spending coins for an item is guaranteed to get you that item when he has it.

I feel that exotic bounties are the only way to "earn"exotics, and you feel the most accomplished after getting one here. Vex is also "earned," but there is still that RNG aspect. You could be dead the entire time and get the best drops. I wish there were more exotic bounties.
-
Edited by Garvhoz: 2/19/2015 12:19:00 AMKinda because even though you did work for those motes, the drop is still random and isn't too sure. Don't get me wrong though, it is definitely more earning than a random drop from a patrol, but it's still very random and considering that Xur doesn't always sell them brings up the chance aspect and even more RNG
-
If anything buying items is closer to earning them than getting a lucky drop is. Personally I dont really find either method if getting items to be "earning" since you cant actually actively try to get an item, if you want red death and it shows up in Xur's shop you didnt actually do anything to make that happen it was just luck. Also if you wanted red death and got it after doing a nightfall you still didnt do anything to get that item it was just luck. Really the only difference between the 2 methods is that when buying from Xur you have to save up coins so that you can buy the item you want if you get lucky and it shows up, where as getting an item as a drop is just luck but you dont have to save up anything in order to actually get it. Either way its really not earning, to me earning would be actively working towards getting something, for example the thing I find closest to actually earning is the Vex or Nechrochasm, where you can only get it one way and you have to keep doing that same thing to get a chance at the drop. Even that though is still not really earning since its still all luck as to whether or not you get the drop.
-
kinda because based on the amount of strikes you usually need to run to get an exotic, they should cost more than 13-23 coins (4 strikes)
-
I honestly just wish the items were randomly picked to sell(like they are already) however instead of every thing being the same price I wish they were priced different according to the exotic. Like red death would be more coins than no land beyond...
-
Yes because you have to play and grind to get strange coins
-
To all the people that complain xur just helps noobs, remember that you have bought good weapons from him before. I don't consider anything in this game earned. It is all luck.
-
To buy items from Xur you need to earn strange coins and motes of light so if you get it from Xur or RNG, you earned it regardless
-
Yep. Since playing the game is the only way to get strange coins, and strange coins are required to purchase exotic items, the purchase of exotic items using strange coins is in fact, earning the item.
-
Dude stop
-
If you actually care, you are silly.
-
Everything is earned. RNG - I played the game and earned this awesome loot drop. Xur - I played the game and saved up my coins and earned the right to spend them on this exotic. Honestly it doesn't matter. Just have fun with the game and the people you meet while playing it :)
-
Just like real life, you earn money and buy things. Therefore you earned them. In destiny you earn strange coins and buy things. Therefore you earned them. Seems pretty straightforward and simple.
-
Yes because you had to get your strange coins
