Most of us are blinded by the holiness of RNGsus. But I'm a sceptic and a non-believer, so I have a theory of why YOU wont get a certain weapon, but others will.
Now, we all think that it's all based on RNG, but I don't really think so. I do understand the concept of randomness, but I don't believe that's a fact in this concern.
I am gonna use two examples:
Player 1:
- has Thunderlord and Gjallarhorn
- want Ice Breaker and SUROS
Player 2:
- has SUROS and Ice Breaker
- want Thunderlord and Gjallarhorn
Player 1 and 2 keeps on grinding for their wanted weapons, but usually get random crap drops. And to top that, they get multiple drops of the exotics they already have. (like me, i've gotten 3 No Land Beyond from Crota)
And this is where my theory comes in...
Bungie has a system (fixed RNG), that basicly makes it (nearly) impossible for you to get the weapons you are missing. It's like your profile is assigned to certain weapons. Me, I get SUROS all the time.
So a simple example for this system would be:
"Drops assigned to Player 1: Thunderlord, Gjallarhorn etc" (these are the drops always handed out)
"Drops avoided for Player 1: Ice Breaker, SUROS, etc" ( these are the drops that might never happen)
(same with Player 2,3,4,5,6,7, infinity)
I know there are many RNGsus followers out there, and by all means, praise him! But me, I'm not fooled by this non-sense anymore. Just like anything else, Bungie likes to control the community, so they control RNG as well.
Yeah, I know, Bungie started selling Ice Breaker, which was hard to get for many of us. But that was also their decision. Why do you think it became available shortly after CE? To soothe the masses to keep them playing.
Conclusion: Players will always get the same drops, and will most likely never get that one thing they are missing (in my case Gjallarhorn).
Hope i made sense. I've been thinking about this for a long time, but never been able to put a word to it. Maybe i wasn't able now either... I might be wrong, but I'm sure my points makes it clear enough.
*edit 1*
I see many say they have all Exotics, and asks me to explain that. Well, that's cause Bungie decided that your profile, amongst others, could. That's why.
*edit 2*
*sigh* This wasn't actually meant to be a post about weapons never dropping, cause they can. It's just that it is controlled by Bungie. Sure, some of you have played for 500 hours and finally gotten a certain weapon. But because the community is continously growing, Bungie decides to hand out X amount of, ie, GHs a day, but still manage to control the weapon flow.
*edit 3*
People seem to be believe I'm saying stuff never drops. If it says that somewhere in my post (I've tried to reword myself), that's not what I'm saying. Please, read my post over again, especially "edit 2".
*edit 4*
Well, I expected a lot of flaming since my so called theory is far fatched, flawed and simply crappy :P
I've tried my best to answer most posts I've seen fit. Thankfully most have been serious posts. Some not.
I am now going to get a beer and my whisky bottle, sit down, and play some Strikes. Will check in later to see if this is still alive.
Hopefully I will prove myself wrong and get GH tonight... hrhrhhr

Ok yeah you're just -blam!-ing retarded

Lol u sir suffer from paranoia... I cudnt get ghorn for like ever. Now I have 1 for each character. Rng isn't dictated. It's just random, and no one should get angry at not getting stuff. U will get it when u get it. If that pisses u off then perhaps u shud just play a game that doesn't make u wana post stupid stuff like this
-
I understand this, I myself always get Icebreaker and multi tool, for example last weeks night fall 2 out of my 3 runs I got the MIDA Multitool. since launch I have gotten probly about 12 of those and 7 or 8 icebreakers none from Xur. Although I do have every exotic now including necrochasm a few exotics such as Thunderlord I really had to grind for, played night fall and raid with all 3 characters since mid october and did not get thundelord in till about a week ago. I do not think they make it impossible for certain exotics to drop I just feel that the drop rate for some exotics are higher/lower from player to player.
-
No it's because the rare ones like thunderlord/Gjallarhorn/Suros have less weight than the crap ones like no land beyond. People like me who have one or all of the 3 rare ones are just extremely lucky. That's why people tend to go through a few plan Cs before they finally get their red death
-
Idk of this is true but I've come to that conclusion as well
-
I skipped like all of it cuz I have tlord and ib and not suros and ghorn
-
*tinfoil hat*

This is part of the nature of RNG. It isn't actually random, it's a random number generator. This means there's an algorithm that generates what looks like random numbers. In my experience these tend to get "stuck" in small ranges sometimes. I think this is what's giving people repeat exotics. I think this is also why people get three sets of strange coins in a single week for the nightfall.
-
Yeah.... Gjallarhorn 3 times...... Apotheosis veil 3 times...... No suros or red death yet
-
I dismantled my thunderlord
-
-
There's a whole in your theory, because I have every exotic multiple times
-
Edited by Troylockdown: 2/19/2015 2:01:22 PMI got every exotic through hundreds of hours of collective gameplay between all 3 characters. Get good.
-
Gorgon Chest: Hardlight Deathsinger: Hardlight My Vault : Hardlight x3 I believe you do get set on certain loot tables at certain times. Both Thunderlord and Gjallarhorn dropped for me in the same week, where as before, i never had them or even seen them drop for people in my Fireteam. Earlier in that week, Gjallarhorn dropped for someone in my fireteam after Crota ( i was salty, at the time i was still waiting for that drop)

I think you may well be correct, that the RNG system is set up to ensure players keep grinding, by keeping the carrot (some of the best and/or most coveted weapons) dangling in front of us for as long as possible. I doubt, however, that certain players are permitted certain weapons and denied others. I think it is more likely that Bungie has set up an RNG system where the odds of getting a certain weapon in a drop are dependent on a number of things, including; the desirability of the weapon, the weapons you already have, and, perhaps, how long you have been playing, etc. For example, the system might award you Suros, but then your having Suros would cause RNG to decrease the likelyhood of you getting Ghorn. By doing this, it would be possible for anyone to get all of the exotic weapons, but it would be more likely for a player to always be chasing at least one of two of the most wanted weapons. Just my 2cents.
-
I have suspected this as well all along. I agree.
-
well that would explain my 6 Monte Carlos, 4 Truths, and 4 Ice Breakers. Actually, every exotic I have, I've had more than 2 of other than Hawkmoon. Still no gjally though...oh well I've learned to love Truth and Thunderlord as my exotic heavies
-
Had this theory too. After 1000+ hrs, never got the Ghorn. Started over my Warlock, week later got Ghorn. Very happy I made that decision!!
-
The only exotic weapon I was missing was Hardlight and now after I got it from a night fall last week I've gotten it three more times...
-
Don't know if it's truly random but all I could get from ce hard was the word, no fangs. Finally got a fang, now they drop every time. I also get the same exotics over and over. Lucky for me that includes gally, gotten 3 so far. Dunno how many hawkmoons, etc. I get the same ones over and over, same with bounties. Invective bad juju and thorn over and over. I'm actually only missing suros hard light, and sga. I think it's weighed random.
-
Edited by Sn1ff7y: 2/19/2015 1:55:56 PMIt's 100% weighted, there's a insanely small probability that I've received 11 drops of the DLC exotics since they added TDB from a pool of 3 and 4 pre DLC exotics from a pool of 14 (excluding weapon bounties). If someone smarter than myself could work out the exact chance of this happening that would be cool.
-
I'll just leave this here...it might explain everyone's theories on the randomness... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-31302312

Edited by MissFortune 21: 2/19/2015 1:43:43 PMUuhm.. What if you have Suros, icebreaker, thunderlord aaaand gjallarhorn then? And they have all been drops btw But you are onto something because as soon as one of them dropped it would drop again. I've had 2 suros', 2 thunderlords, gallys and breakers... Its just dumb. Thunderlord was my first love though

Here is some rng for us. Death singer I get no land beyond after finishing Crota I get red death. Both check points give a chance for exotic drops. Bother gave me exotics next raid what did I get from them two check points energy and shards and a helmet. So really it is all about a rng code Cuz at a certain point I think everything has a numbered assigned to it yes Ghorn probably has only 1 number and no land beyond or dragons breath may have 10 but they all have a number and the computer picks a random let's say 6 digit code and it matches that code up with what ever is on the loot table.
