Initial source of income, needed to buy heroes, to get builders and was a strong defensive structure. It also cost a lot of income to build another. Not to mention that losing your base when no builders remained alive means that you can't build anything anymore.
Oh, and losing all your bases and troop building structures meant you lost.

Ha, good point! Didn't think of that. And lord, this was years ago. The servers have been shut down for a long time. But I do know that using my troll army for justice destroyed my rep (this was on the 360). A lot of negative feedback was sent my direction.
