Just about to finish Terra's story but the last boss is a pain on CM

I love JRPGs but not sure why I have returned to it. I really should try. Is the second one similar to the first? When does the first one pick up?

Honestly its a really complicated story but its so good. I played it on the ps2 when it came out so it was my childhood game. Has a special place in my heart
