Well... ok so here's my dilemna... I am the same way as you. However, my sister is of the mind that even something not intended to be offensive but is offensive should be confronted. Not in a hostile way, but the abuser should be confronted and held accountable for his words. The thinking is that if she lets a thing like that go, then it passively legitimizes it in a way, and that kind of speech will continue to be used. But myself, I never thought along those lines, I didn't care... until my nephews heard things on the playground directed towards others or themselves. She taught them to stand up for themselves and others in those situations. So now, I make an effort to not tolerate any kind of hate speech, whether it was intended for hate or not, for the sake a setting an example for them. But really, it always kind of bothered me to hear stuff like "jewed me down" or "dirty jew" roll so easily off the tongues of 12 year olds on xbox live. There's something wrong when that happens.
