Open House Exotic Perks a Discussion

First off I would like to say I love Destiny and I think its a great game. I have sunk over 600 hours into it thus far and will continue to sink hours in as long as the content you create is phenomenal. With that said I think the perks in general need a general overhaul. Especially the exotic perks, one or two exotics should not shine over all others in their perks. As an example, here is a Reddit post that was made a month ago showing the consensus on the "tier" of the exotic weapons. http://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/2rc23x/reddit_voted_exotic_weapon_rankings_ownership/ I think it paints a clear picture of which exotics need help. Mostly it is in terms of fantastic/terrible perk. There are some guns that have completely useless perks. ------------------------------------- Exotic Weapons: ------------------------------------- Icebreaker One of the best known exotic, has only a single useful perk, and that is the regenerating ammo. All the other perks on this gun don't have any influence on its stats. Even if it didn't have a skill tree, this weapon would still be coveted. HOWEVER, its single regenerating ammo perk helps it shine, it's the only redeeming quality to this weapon. I just wish the different perks would change the function of the weapon. Hardlight Has the ability to overpenetrate, but it's not any better than a legendary rifle that has armor piercing rounds. The rounds of hard light should be able to pierce through shielded enemies (doing lower damage) or at the very least the shields of phalanxes. This would give hardlight a "step above" the AP perk as well as giving it a use in high level content where enemies are shielded. Mida Has the inherent ability to stagger more frequently. However this mechanic is completely nullified by the angry modifier. Something that I feel makes this weapon fall into "a different weapon is better". If this stagger modifier helped to still stagger angry mobs, then it would have a very useful perk for those running high level content missions. A gun that loses its perks is a useless gun. Especially an exotic that is supposed to be.....well exotic. The Last Word I think its perk set is great, however the perks are given to the worst part of this gun. The hipfire on is terribly inaccurate even with stability maxed and its difficult at best to see the reticule to line up headshots. For a gun that gives all its perks to hipfire, it should have a pretty decent hipfire cone, which it doesn't, the bad reticule is just icing on the cake. I have spent countless hours practicing hipfiring this gun and the risk of missing shots is just not worth it. In nearly every case you are better aiming down sites, which means the exotic perks are mostly useless. As far as the rest of the exotic weapons, I think for the most part the remaining are well balanced for their intended role. There are weapons like No land beyond, dragons breath that could use some tweaks, but I think you are aware of those issues as the community has been pretty vocal about them. I would like to end this by saying: I really wish that all exotics could shine in both PvE and PvP, but I understand its difficult to balance, just a pipe dream. ----------------------------------- Exotic Armors: ----------------------------------- This leads me to the perks for exotic armor. There are great choices for armor as well but these sadly overshadow all other armors. I feel exotic armors should allow you to utilize a perk that otherwise cannot be obtained in game. Easy examples are Helm of Saint-14, Obsidian Mind, Achlyophage Symbiote, Don't Touch Me, Claws of Ahamkara and Armamentarium. However, there are plenty of examples that typify a poor choice for an exotic perk in the armor category and I think these need to be evaluated and improved upon to allow more varied playstyles. ATS/8 Arachnid A perfect subject to showcase as it has no real use in either PvP or PvE in which increased zoom is necessary on the golden gun. I don't know anyone who would use this helmet over the Achlyophage Symbiote. Exotic boots M44 Stand Asides have a poor perk choice as its rarely useful. The Radiant Dance Machines at least have a huge improvement for PvP related activities, but are pointless in PvE. ---------------------- Builds ---------------------- I want to close by showcasing what I believe is an example of great exotic balance and allowing someone with exotics to reinforce or change their playstyle based on what they decide to wear onto the battlefield. SunBro: Monte Carlo along with Claws of Ahamkara. - This allows you to change from the typical playstyle to CQC in PvE. Monte Carlo allows you to have constant scorch and if you set your perks with flame shield and generate orbs on killing enemies with scorch you make yourself an orb machine while constantly having an overshield. You stack radiance on top of this with Radiant Skin and you are nearly unstoppable. VoidBro: Bad JuJu with Obsidian Mind - This is likely everyones favorite set of exotics as it provides nearly constant super energy. I think this a pretty straight forward build, but it is a great example of synergy of exotics. DefenderBro: Thunderlord with Ruin Wings - When combining the best machine gun in the game with extra heavy ammo means you almost never run out of machine gun bullets. If you run Iron Harvest you generate orbs at an unprecedented rate for your team mates. StrikerBro -Doesn't have a very synergistic exotic combo, something that needs to be fixed. The striker has armor that only replaces perks that are in its skill tree besides the boots, which already don't provide a very good bonus. Hunter Bro Bad JuJu, Don't Touch Me, and helmet with super energy for kills - While unconventional and not really a typical synergistic build, this allows you unprecedented super regeneration. No other class can increase their super as quickly as a hunter with these items equipped. Anyway that about wraps this up. TL;DR: 1. Exotic perks need some serious love, mostly the low end exotics that currently have no place in the exotic category. 2. Exotics should have synergy with other exotics to create strong builds that are otherwise impossible. 3. Thanks for reading.
