I've been a big fan of the rise of the Empire era and everything before but i recently took an interest into expanding my knowledge of the new Jedi Order era and events that happened after Episode 6. What novel would you recommend to provide a smooth transition from Return of the Jedi to The New Jedi Order era. [spoiler]In short, is there a novel outlining the events that occurred right after Episode 6?[/spoiler]

Don't bother reading the books. They've officially thrown away all the expanded universe and the movies will be canon
