When people (like me) say there is no story we aren't being literal. The game has a plot it's just completely devoid of all detail/nuance, & is very short. The biggest problem with this is there originally was a great & extensive story that was gutted about a year b4 release. What was left was the thin foundation to a story, & the dialogue became an incoherent mess (ex: "I don't even have time to explain why I don't have time to explain"). Also it was marketed as this epic adventure despite having as little plot as possible. Giving the existing story an 8.5 is extraordinarily generous. It's more like a 5-6 with the dialogue & the fact that all of the story's [minuscule amount of] depth is on the grimoire cards. Having said that, I still thoroughly enjoy Destiny. It's really fun, the mechanics are rock solid, the graphics are great, & I don't mind grinding for gear. With the story it has it's a really fun game that didn't reach it's potential. With the original story it would have been a truly great game, up there with the likes of Halo 3.
