This post is about the class-specific upgrade materials you get from, and need for, armor: Hadronic Essence, Sapphire Wire, and Plasteel Plating. The problem with them is that in their current state they are either virtually nonexistent or infuriating.
I main a Warlock and I have almost 1000 Hadronic Essence. My other two characters are a Titan and Hunter, and I am at the bottom of the barrel for Plating and Wire. I have leveled up a lot of armor with them but I've gotten to the point where I can't upgrade my last remaining exotics because I have to grind two or three Roc strikes for a single node. Now I enjoy playing the strike playlists from time to time but this has become very annoying. It means that I am not leveling up alternative pieces of raid gear not even because of the relatively scarce Radiant materials, but because I don't want to have to grind strikes only to be back to zero Wire or Plating again when I'm done. It also means that I feel pressured not to play with my Warlock because he has more Essence than he needs.
No one wins in this situation. It's making me enjoy Destiny less. It punishes people for having three characters of different classes.
Here are some solutions that shouldn't be difficult to implement:
- Trade one class's materials for another. It would be great if I could trade Hadronic Essence for one of the other materials at the Tower for a minimal fee or no fee at all (or else you're trading grinding for grinding)
- Reduce the materials required for armor upgrade nodes. Self-explanatory.
- Have armor upgrade materials be purchasable from the Tower with marks This follows the precedent with the other materials you had to farm previously. That was a great move. This would be as well.
- Increase materials yielded by breaking down uncommon or rare armor. This is my least preferred option but it would certainly help if green armor yielded ~5 mats per piece instead of just one. Needing twenty-five green armor drops to get one exotic or raid upgrade node is a bit excessive, don't you think?
Thank you for making Destiny. I enjoy it and would enjoy it a lot more with less arbitrary barriers to enjoying new gear.
For players reading this, please bump if you can relate or think it's a good idea.

Each upgrade node needs 16 materials, so that's around 8,000g per node, which isn't too outrageous. (You can farm the glimmer in 20 minutes on Exclusion Zone.) Another thing I used to do was farm chests. Mars and Venus are easiest. If you don't know how, there are great videos out there on YouTube. You should be swimming in excess materials in no time.
