UPDATES 1-3, with TLDR/SUMMARY located at the bottom of the page.
Bungie,
Thank you! Thank you for hearing us, and giving us an increase in the vault space. Thank you for also giving us some details, statistics, and insights into how things look from your end. It is very helpful to us. We appreciate the detailed answer to our questions regarding the vault space. Hopefully you realize your work is not done.
I have spent a lot of time reading the feedback from the community regarding this matter. Many of your most loyal customers, your most invested fans, the most hard-core players, feel this increase is underwhelming. We feel this is not nearly enough to accommodate all the game has to offer currently, and especially not enough when future DLC is released. When HoW drops, we will be right back in the pain that we are currently feeling.
"JH: Very few people have completely full Vaults, but a lot of endgame players are bumping up against the limits. For example, 21% of players who are level 30+ have 4 or fewer free spaces in their weapon Vaults right now. The armor and general sections are slightly less full for most people, but not by much. Even at lower levels, there’s a small but measurable fraction of players under level 20 who have full Vaults. You could charitably think of them as “collectors” or uncharitably label them as “packrats,” but some people just flat out like holding onto their stuff."
The reason why our vaults are not full is because we have 3 characters full of stuff. We need the vault space in order to move things between our characters, that's why it's not completely packed full at the moment. A full vault doesn't give us the flexibility we need, so we leave some space open. Even then, the limited amount of gear that we have now is simply because we've been breaking down many duplicates that we would otherwise have wished to keep. The numbers that you're seeing, is a stripped down version of what many of us would like to keep, but are currently unable to because of the restrictive space. Are you looking at the statistics of how many items we had to dismantle in order to keep it down to those 4 empty spaces in the vault? What about the number of players using the Postmaster as extra storage space? For those players who like to hold on to their stuff, I don't see why that's a bad thing. If players want to have 3 copies of each exotic so they don't have to constantly switch between players, then the game should allow for that. Even if many people don't want to invest the time required to do that, lots of us do. Let us play your game as much as we want. The current restrictions do not allow your most loyal fans the breathing room they need.
"Different players have different needs, but our goal was to find a solution that could deliver more Vault space to the greatest number of people in the short term. Our challenge was to provide an increase in storage that fit within the memory constraints that limit how many items can be displayed on one screen."
Why does the Vault Space need to be limited to only one screen? There have been numerous posts in the forums suggesting the idea of having multiple screens in the vault, why have those been ignored? I agree you definitely need to address the most people in the shortest amount of time (7 months is short?) but don't ignore the top 21% of your loyal fans. We have needs too. :)
"We know there are a bunch of players in the world who don’t have enough space for Armor and General items. We’ll have a solution for you in the future."
In my earlier thread about our "1st World Problems", (https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/87629716/0/0) I asked for some temporary relief while you find a better long-term solution that will work with the current boundaries and constraints you are dealing with. I feel this qualifies as a temporary solution. Thank you! Now keep going, please. :) I'm very happy to hear that you agree this isn't enough.
"In the case of the Vault expansion, it became clear that we would be pushing very limited memory constraints on older generation hardware. We had a choice: leave the Vault as-is, or find some kind of compromise to enable it safely. We weighed the options, with player feedback in mind, and decided to move forward with the expansion by disabling the item comparison feature within the Vault on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Item comparison will continue to function within the Vault on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and in all other contexts on all platforms."
I found this to be particularly helpful in understanding why this has taken so long to implement. It sounds to me like you are running up against the boundaries of what is possible on the older platforms. If this is true, what hope does the future hold? Would giving the vault multiple screens push past those boundaries? In any case, thank you for giving us some idea of what challenges you are running up against, this helps us give you better feedback if we understand what is within the realm of possibility, and what isn't.
"We may not be making you as rich as Charlemagne, but those of you who have Vaults that are bursting at the seams with sweet loot are in for some relief. Stand by, because Update 1.1.2 arrives in April. As for what the future holds for Vaults, only a time traveler would know for sure."
Thank you for the temporary relief, it is appreciated. Very much. Please understand, this isn't nearly enough. Not by a long shot. I don't know the exact numbers, but there are way more unique items in the game than there are spaces between the vault, and 3 characters. If your most loyal players, your biggest fans, the cream of the crop, if they want to keep 3 copies of every exotic, every legendary from each raid, every legendary from the Iron Banner, and even some of their other favorite random Legendaries, as well as keep multiple stacks of consumables and other currency/materials, then this game needs to be able to accommodate that, or you will continue to lose your very best players, and be left with nothing but fair-weather fans, and medocrity. The reason why the community is so heated about this is because WE LOVE THIS GAME! We love what Destiny is, and have high hopes for what it can become. Right now, I feel like a disappointed parent, seeing how much potential my child has, knowing he is woefully underperforming his potential.
REQUEST TO THE COMMUNITY: I know you're pissed. We all are. This is the most disappointing news we've received in a long time. But please, try to keep things positive and helpful. Don't turn this into a flame war on Bungie, that's not helpful, not constructive. Thanks!
If you agree with this post, please Like and Comment. Keep bumping and trending!
UPDATE 1: Here is a fantastic idea: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0
UPDATE 2: Here is a summary of all of the ideas suggested by the community. Bungie, please review these and get back to us with your plan.
* By far, the best solution: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0 Not only is what we want, but this is also what the game needs. This will definitely put this issue to rest once and for all.
* If single screen gives legacy support issues, then break up the vault into multiple screens. If 60 can safely be displayed, give us 60 primary weapons, 60 special weapons, 60 heavy weapons, 60 helmets, 60 gauntlets, 60 chest, 60 legs, 60 consumables, 60 materials, 60 shaders, 60 ships, etc. Break them out into tabs so it's not all on one screen.
* Give us an online only vault. Make it accessible only by the companion app, or by bungie.net - that would also remove legacy conerns.
* Break out the vault into the 3 different consoles in the tower where the vault currently sits. Have each tower be a different category. This would also be a temporary fix until you can implement a permanent vault fix.
* Remove stack limits on General items such as 20 for ammo synths, 200 for planetary materials, etc.
* Put an additional vault in the Reef when the new social space goes live.
* Allow the vendors to sell bags that can hold multiple items, but be stored in one inventory square.
* Make adjustments to materials - see this thread: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/112786601/0/0
* Give each character their own individual vault in addition to the shared vault for all 3 characters.
* Above all, please don't wait another 7 months to address this again. A game based entirely around loot should not force it's most loyal players to dismantle the majority of the loot we'd like to keep. That makes this entire grind pointless.
Community, did I miss anything?
Bungie, we hope you find these solutions helpful. Please communicate with us. Thank you!
UPDATE 3: Here is my vault: http://imgur.com/JvL273l This is pre-HoW. My characters are full as well.
TLDR/SUMMARY:
1. Thank you for the upcoming vault increase!
2. The increase is not enough to accommodate all the game currently has to offer. Especially not after new DLC.
3. We don't have full vaults because we need empty spaces to properly use the vault. Re-evaluate this need. It does exist.
4. We are being forced to dismantle most of the loot we find. (in a game based entirely around loot, makes it frustrating)
5. Don't limit the vault to 1 screen. Will that work with last gen consoles?
6. 1.1.2 Update is only a temporary band-aid for a bullet-hole sized problem.
7. We love this game! We are excited to see what it can become!
8. The vault space concept that will put this issue to rest once and for all: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0
9. Other ideas mentioned by the community.
10. Picture of current player's vault.

Can you add a TLDR, cause that post is killer long. "Aint nobody got time for dat!"

Edited by GreyPooponya: 3/28/2015 5:11:07 PMThis doesn't just screw hardcore players. I do (did) play a lot of Destiny, but I play casually. I don't believe in min/maxing and I enjoy a variety of weapons. Some hardcore players simply have a few setups that they feel is the best and that's all they use. Many hardcore players have their signature raid and faction shader they wear religiously. I like to change it up every so often. But regardless, with so many different elements and perks, it's hard to say my 3 longbow synthesis rifles are "duplicates" they're totally different guns. You know how lucky I was to get 1 of each in each different element type? That shit doesn't happen twice in this loot system. I'm not a collector. Shit, even with max vault space I'd be dismantling like crazy, but variety is the -blam!-ing spice of life...I mean I really can't understand min/maxers and they suck my balls. There's also nothing cooler than wiping out a level 32 thorn asscannon spammer with a weapon with a strange name they've never heard of and they go to inspect you and see it's just some random blue one lol

Reasons for the limited vault space -Things that run on a 15 year old "hardware platform". -QC / Debug cycles are at least 2-3 months - D.H. / Also known as "Digital Hoarding" is not want this game is about. Clean your vault ...clean your room,Clean your life! Make a intervention now if you known of a person inflicted with this dreaded psycho addictive condition. Thank you Guardian! #satire #getalife #206

Bump again for being awesome.

I consider myself to be an invested player, and I am struggling to find space for everything and still will post patch. I have items at the postmaster across all 3 characters that I have no way of accessing unless I dismantle something :( I did have a full set of vault gear for each character but this has dwindled to one set between 3. I currently have crota gear across 3 characters but will need to drop this when how arrives. I'd rather not. Thanks to the op for articulating our concerns and desires in a non inflammatory manner. For now I am moving to borderlands as I am too full up with destiny. I'll be back, make no mistake, but right now the game is constraining me.
Many of your most loyal customers, your most invested fans, the most hard-core players, feel this increase is underwhelming.
You only fit two of those qualifications, SIR! Check your privilege! lol Anyways, my vault space is great. You know why? I haven't played the game much since the day of the Dark Below DLC launch (about 3 MONTHS!). I haven't got all of those new items. Glad to see I'm part of your statistic of players who are "30+". Being a former MMO gamer I know how it is when new content is released and the amount of bank space is insufficient. Juggling sucks but the fix to many people there was to dump their less used items into a secondary character. We don't have that here where all characters share the same vault space. But you already know the problems don't you? If the difficulty is technical are there not ways around it? I like the suggestion OP linked. Looks like it would work.

Bumppp
-
Wow. This is actually a good post, in feedback no less! Jokes aside, I completely agree.
-
-
Not to be a greedy guardian, but seriously? The increase is so damn small i can fill it all up in a week! hanks bungie i do appreciate your effort.
-
Yep, I have to dismantle many weapon just to have space in my vault... sad thing.
-
Edited by xEMIx Korgano: 3/28/2015 6:27:31 AMTo everyone who says "you don't need that much stuff" - you're telling us NOT to collect loot, in a loot-based game. Do you hear yourself? We're not the problem. The vault is.
-
The extra space is appreciated. However, when the vault peeper looked into how much vault space was being used he clearly didn't understand that the real reason most players didn't have all the slots full was because players need to have empty slots in the vault to temporarily store items so their other character can pick them up. LOL I mean Really!? This shows us how out of touch some devs are from the way actual gamers utilize it's features. Everyone saying they need more space is not enough for some to come to the simple conclusion that....hey, sooo many people are complaining about space, that obviously, significantly more space is needed. No! Instead somebody judiciously concludes that, no you don't need it, because your not even using what you have. Gamer reveals those slots are left empty for transferring weapons between characters. LOL This is comical and sad.
-
Bump for a good piece of feedback. I was looking for more space but Bungie explained themselves well so I'm not so disappointed. However I agree that this shouldn't be the only vault update we get. This should be the temporary fix. And destiny 2 has to leave the old gen behind. Make it into the game we know it can be.
-
The part that make me curious is that it just shows little thumbnails in the Vault screen. You only see a rendered weapon when you hover over it for the pop-up. So it would be too memory-intensive to show double the number of little thumbnails? Am I missing something?
-
Why vault space is preferred over character slots for many gamers. I personally want my weapons primarily stored in the vault because if they are on my characters I have to constantly make extra trips to the tower to transfer items between them. Where as if the weapons are in the vault it is one trip. For example ....Arc burn nightfall. If all my arc burn weapons I want are scattered among three different characters, that's a lot of trips to and from the tower to get them all on one character. However, if desired arc burn weapons are kept in the vault my trip is basically one and done instead of many trips. I complete the night fall, return the weapons to the vault, change characters and pick them up for the next nightfall run. After running the final NF high priority weapons are returned to the vault if not in use for the next activity available for whichever character I want. That is one of many reasons why gamers want more vault space and are not so concerned about character space. Vault space is preferred over character space because it is more convenient and a big time saver. Tons of other reasons why a vast majority of gamers want more vault space.

Edited by Kabr: 3/27/2015 9:27:29 AMWhat we want Good post btw
-
Another way to increase the general vault space is to simply remove the quantity cap on those capped inventory items. Seriously, I can have over 2000 armor/weapon parts in one inventory slot but for some reason, they put an arbitrary cap of 200 on the planetary materials?? Same for ammo synthesis packs and whatever else is capped. Remove the artificial cap and suddenly space in the vault or character inventories grows without actually changing the vault! I guarantee no one will object to this and there will be no problems with the older consoles.
-
EMI, Just one thing. They did not hear you or anybody. Do you really believe Bungie would leave the vault size the same as they make the game bigger? More gear and weapons with each new DLC. This was planned. Badly.
-
They dropped the bomb at a perfect time. Bloodborne is out and so is the Borderlands Collection. Just sayin.
-
Edited by Phantom139: 3/28/2015 12:53:34 AMI was forwarded to this post from my own post on the issue. Instead of re-posting my entire post, I'll just hit the highlights here: 1) Glad Bungie is finally hitting one of the more requested issues, however I do have a few problems with the update. 2) The whole "memory limits" thing Bungie is telling us is complete bull, unless they've absolutely failed in creating their C++ container classes, which should clean up memory when it's not being used. 3) Hitting on #2, there should have been no reason why they couldn't then use the highly requested multiple pages of vault space feature. Since the inventory is downloaded from the server you simply load up what you need, when you need it and free the old memory upon completion, and voila that memory restriction is no longer existent. The big thing from my post though was if Bungie was going to hold onto the notion there, then a solution that could work perfectly fine would be to create an Online Vault, one that you could not access from in-game, but use B.Net or the app to transfer items to & from, and since this would only be dependant on the server storage of a few KB, could easily be about 10 to 50 times the current vault size.
-
I agree with your viewpoint. It does concern me that they are accommodating older consoles to the detriment to the new ones. They will have to phase out of the older consoles at some point. It is inevitable. The sooner the better and I am very aware of the pain this may cause older console users and feel for them. I don't suggest that they can't play but Bungie shouldn't offer any more DLCs or Destiny 2 for the older consoles. I don't know what else to say about it. It is a serious matter to not be able to afford a new console but people should put a few bucks away each week starting now if they haven't already and buy one. Their progress goes with them so they lose nothing other than spending more. In these times this is not so simple and I know this from personal experience.

Exactly what I thought after reading the update, great job

I did a strange comparison of a couple games I played back then to Destiny and I just wanted to make a point regarding content space. Developer: Nintendo EAD Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Released November 23, 1998 (NA) MSRP: $49.99 USD Hours of Gameplay: 70+ (Average gameplay time for complete game exploration) Available on: Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Wii I still don’t have everything in this game after all this time. I just want to point out that this game is not an online game yet has sufficient content that fulfills it. Developer: Sonic Team Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 & 2 Released October 30, 2002 (NA) MSRP: $29.99 USD Hours of Gameplay: 25+ (Average gameplay time for complete game exploration) Available on: Gamecube, Xbox It took me 3 months to get to level 107. The RNG is extremely cruel in this game. You literally needed a GameShark to get the other hundreds of weapons that were impossible to drop in the gameplay. The Vault space in this game’s bank limited each player (max 4 individual characters) to storing 99 items. Maybe it's because these companies had more competition in the industry that forced them to make good games like these, but with the gap in technological breakthroughs from back then to now, (even though this is a completely different company and developer) I know Bungie can top this. I just know they can.

Co-sign My vault has one or two spaces but all three of my lvl 32 characters has one or two empty slot at every spot. Moreover each character has two or three exotics at the postmaster.
