UPDATES 1-3, with TLDR/SUMMARY located at the bottom of the page.
Bungie,
Thank you! Thank you for hearing us, and giving us an increase in the vault space. Thank you for also giving us some details, statistics, and insights into how things look from your end. It is very helpful to us. We appreciate the detailed answer to our questions regarding the vault space. Hopefully you realize your work is not done.
I have spent a lot of time reading the feedback from the community regarding this matter. Many of your most loyal customers, your most invested fans, the most hard-core players, feel this increase is underwhelming. We feel this is not nearly enough to accommodate all the game has to offer currently, and especially not enough when future DLC is released. When HoW drops, we will be right back in the pain that we are currently feeling.
"JH: Very few people have completely full Vaults, but a lot of endgame players are bumping up against the limits. For example, 21% of players who are level 30+ have 4 or fewer free spaces in their weapon Vaults right now. The armor and general sections are slightly less full for most people, but not by much. Even at lower levels, there’s a small but measurable fraction of players under level 20 who have full Vaults. You could charitably think of them as “collectors” or uncharitably label them as “packrats,” but some people just flat out like holding onto their stuff."
The reason why our vaults are not full is because we have 3 characters full of stuff. We need the vault space in order to move things between our characters, that's why it's not completely packed full at the moment. A full vault doesn't give us the flexibility we need, so we leave some space open. Even then, the limited amount of gear that we have now is simply because we've been breaking down many duplicates that we would otherwise have wished to keep. The numbers that you're seeing, is a stripped down version of what many of us would like to keep, but are currently unable to because of the restrictive space. Are you looking at the statistics of how many items we had to dismantle in order to keep it down to those 4 empty spaces in the vault? What about the number of players using the Postmaster as extra storage space? For those players who like to hold on to their stuff, I don't see why that's a bad thing. If players want to have 3 copies of each exotic so they don't have to constantly switch between players, then the game should allow for that. Even if many people don't want to invest the time required to do that, lots of us do. Let us play your game as much as we want. The current restrictions do not allow your most loyal fans the breathing room they need.
"Different players have different needs, but our goal was to find a solution that could deliver more Vault space to the greatest number of people in the short term. Our challenge was to provide an increase in storage that fit within the memory constraints that limit how many items can be displayed on one screen."
Why does the Vault Space need to be limited to only one screen? There have been numerous posts in the forums suggesting the idea of having multiple screens in the vault, why have those been ignored? I agree you definitely need to address the most people in the shortest amount of time (7 months is short?) but don't ignore the top 21% of your loyal fans. We have needs too. :)
"We know there are a bunch of players in the world who don’t have enough space for Armor and General items. We’ll have a solution for you in the future."
In my earlier thread about our "1st World Problems", (https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/87629716/0/0) I asked for some temporary relief while you find a better long-term solution that will work with the current boundaries and constraints you are dealing with. I feel this qualifies as a temporary solution. Thank you! Now keep going, please. :) I'm very happy to hear that you agree this isn't enough.
"In the case of the Vault expansion, it became clear that we would be pushing very limited memory constraints on older generation hardware. We had a choice: leave the Vault as-is, or find some kind of compromise to enable it safely. We weighed the options, with player feedback in mind, and decided to move forward with the expansion by disabling the item comparison feature within the Vault on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Item comparison will continue to function within the Vault on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and in all other contexts on all platforms."
I found this to be particularly helpful in understanding why this has taken so long to implement. It sounds to me like you are running up against the boundaries of what is possible on the older platforms. If this is true, what hope does the future hold? Would giving the vault multiple screens push past those boundaries? In any case, thank you for giving us some idea of what challenges you are running up against, this helps us give you better feedback if we understand what is within the realm of possibility, and what isn't.
"We may not be making you as rich as Charlemagne, but those of you who have Vaults that are bursting at the seams with sweet loot are in for some relief. Stand by, because Update 1.1.2 arrives in April. As for what the future holds for Vaults, only a time traveler would know for sure."
Thank you for the temporary relief, it is appreciated. Very much. Please understand, this isn't nearly enough. Not by a long shot. I don't know the exact numbers, but there are way more unique items in the game than there are spaces between the vault, and 3 characters. If your most loyal players, your biggest fans, the cream of the crop, if they want to keep 3 copies of every exotic, every legendary from each raid, every legendary from the Iron Banner, and even some of their other favorite random Legendaries, as well as keep multiple stacks of consumables and other currency/materials, then this game needs to be able to accommodate that, or you will continue to lose your very best players, and be left with nothing but fair-weather fans, and medocrity. The reason why the community is so heated about this is because WE LOVE THIS GAME! We love what Destiny is, and have high hopes for what it can become. Right now, I feel like a disappointed parent, seeing how much potential my child has, knowing he is woefully underperforming his potential.
REQUEST TO THE COMMUNITY: I know you're pissed. We all are. This is the most disappointing news we've received in a long time. But please, try to keep things positive and helpful. Don't turn this into a flame war on Bungie, that's not helpful, not constructive. Thanks!
If you agree with this post, please Like and Comment. Keep bumping and trending!
UPDATE 1: Here is a fantastic idea: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0
UPDATE 2: Here is a summary of all of the ideas suggested by the community. Bungie, please review these and get back to us with your plan.
* By far, the best solution: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0 Not only is what we want, but this is also what the game needs. This will definitely put this issue to rest once and for all.
* If single screen gives legacy support issues, then break up the vault into multiple screens. If 60 can safely be displayed, give us 60 primary weapons, 60 special weapons, 60 heavy weapons, 60 helmets, 60 gauntlets, 60 chest, 60 legs, 60 consumables, 60 materials, 60 shaders, 60 ships, etc. Break them out into tabs so it's not all on one screen.
* Give us an online only vault. Make it accessible only by the companion app, or by bungie.net - that would also remove legacy conerns.
* Break out the vault into the 3 different consoles in the tower where the vault currently sits. Have each tower be a different category. This would also be a temporary fix until you can implement a permanent vault fix.
* Remove stack limits on General items such as 20 for ammo synths, 200 for planetary materials, etc.
* Put an additional vault in the Reef when the new social space goes live.
* Allow the vendors to sell bags that can hold multiple items, but be stored in one inventory square.
* Make adjustments to materials - see this thread: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/112786601/0/0
* Give each character their own individual vault in addition to the shared vault for all 3 characters.
* Above all, please don't wait another 7 months to address this again. A game based entirely around loot should not force it's most loyal players to dismantle the majority of the loot we'd like to keep. That makes this entire grind pointless.
Community, did I miss anything?
Bungie, we hope you find these solutions helpful. Please communicate with us. Thank you!
UPDATE 3: Here is my vault: http://imgur.com/JvL273l This is pre-HoW. My characters are full as well.
TLDR/SUMMARY:
1. Thank you for the upcoming vault increase!
2. The increase is not enough to accommodate all the game currently has to offer. Especially not after new DLC.
3. We don't have full vaults because we need empty spaces to properly use the vault. Re-evaluate this need. It does exist.
4. We are being forced to dismantle most of the loot we find. (in a game based entirely around loot, makes it frustrating)
5. Don't limit the vault to 1 screen. Will that work with last gen consoles?
6. 1.1.2 Update is only a temporary band-aid for a bullet-hole sized problem.
7. We love this game! We are excited to see what it can become!
8. The vault space concept that will put this issue to rest once and for all: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0
9. Other ideas mentioned by the community.
10. Picture of current player's vault.

Co-sign My vault has one or two spaces but all three of my lvl 32 characters has one or two empty slot at every spot. Moreover each character has two or three exotics at the postmaster.
-
Realistically: 1. We should not be limited to 200 mats (like spirit bloom) in a single slot. I often have 300+ of a mat and it takes up two spots. Lame. I have hundreds of weapon parts and armor parts and ascendent mats and they all co-exist in one slot... 2. VoG had 10 weapons to collect. CE has 10 weapons to collect. Right there, without including any non-raid exotics, legendaries, the Stranger's Rifle or the Khostov, that's 20 slots. Now add in your exotics (I have 20 not counting duplicates), I have my favorites legendaries (Murmur, Plug.1s, LDRs, Against all Odds, Valedictorians, and a bunch of hand cannons & scout rifles) and that is another 40 weapons. Realistically, I need about 80 slots not counting all my duplicates. I have 3 Fatebringers, 4 Vex Mythos, and tons of duplicate exotics and raid weapons. 3. I have 3 toons. There will be 3 raids, each with their own 4-piece armor setup. That's 24 slots assuming I have armor on my characters...but then there are exotics. I have 6 helms, 2 arms, 5 chests and 1 set of legs. Once HoW arrives I'm sure that will grow to 20 total. This doesn't count class items. I am happy Bungie did something, but it isn't enough. Doubling the old vault space would have been closer, but still likely short of the overall goal. The bummer is, now I have to come to terms with the fact that I should only have one Fatebringer, one Atheon's Epilogue, one Vex Mythocast, one Swordbreaker, one Hunger of Crota, etc, etc, which means I need to dismantle my hard earned loot for useless mats. Lame.

I can't think of anything to comment so I'm just going to post a Blueberry pancake recipe. 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 1/4 teaspoons white sugar 1 egg 1 cup milk 1/2 tablespoon butter, melted 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries, thawed 1. In a large bowl, sift together flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda and sugar. In a small bowl, beat together egg and milk. Stir milk and egg into flour mixture. Mix in the butter and fold in the blueberries. Set aside for 1 hour.A 2. Heat a lightly oiled griddle. or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve. EnJoy

LOL @ another post begging for people to be nice to Bungie despite the fact they overhyped crap and disappointed again. -blam!- Bungie and -blam!- Destiny.
-
Someone should make a YouTube video showing the process of swapping shit around and tag bungie in it. Then make a meme about this shitty update
-
Damn that fan made vault is on point!!!! I would collect all the games items if we had that shit bro. Id buy a God damn Xbox one just to that shit Lol
-
What Bungie did was akin to asking your boss for a much needed loan in a time of need and he hands you 5 bucks
-
Just like to point out on Xbox 1, 21 exotics 9 vog guns 9 crota guns 9 iron banner guns and 9 for house of wolves makes 57 with out saving blue weapons for PvP. Can't you just give us 100 slots for weapons on one page and page 2 give us 30 armor and 30 inventory slots then I could sort throw my ships and shaders.

That ending link is fantastic!
-
Wank still no space Enough for a bollock Not the cock
-
I find it interesting that bloodborne has 99 slots of storage for each item. It is just next gen though, that might have something to do with it.
-
Very well put
-
I stopped reading at "Thank you"
-
Destiny 4 will have the space you want... True story
-
I've always thought that what ever is in your vault effects your RNG, which to me makes more sense to why they can only add so much extra space without messing their little algorithm up. But if it is due too the constraints of previous systems, maybe it's time for them to make a better/different version for the modern systems? That might motivate people to finally upgrade.
-
TL DR, cool picture tho.
-
Put 250 slots I put in a lot a lot of work as well as others #day1loyal player
-
I'm not hard core at all, but I am day 1, my inventorys Been strategically balanced for months. Its mostly exotics a few legendary raid weapons and consumables that have no use.. Pointing that middle finger at 300 ascendant shards..
-
Not going to read that whole post, the increased space is nice just so I don't get the stop no room error message.. Period
-
I'm happy with the space increase and the explanation of technical challenges. I'm hopeful that Bungie will work around their memory constraints before we outgrow our new vault limits (or maybe soon after).
-
I would like to believe this is a troll by bungie, I know they Are actually changing the vault to this but if reef social space is real, there is bound to be another vault location therefore we would have two vaults of equal size at the new 24*36*24 dimensions :)

Edited by bishop: 3/27/2015 7:03:14 PMI've just read your whole post and I'm very ok with multiple sections of it. One of them, I would say the biggest one, is specially the part where you talk about the items we have had to dismantle. That is some statistic Bungie haven't considered yet (I think so) and that may be a very good answer for why do most of the players still have 4 empty spaces. And I would try to clarify a doubt you have on your post and one that you are asking to Bungie: I found this to be particularly helpful in understanding why this has taken so long to implement. And the answer is simply: you're right. Talking about programming you have to relate multiple sections within a software, sometimes it may be side by side or one over the other. When "one over the other" happens, if you have to change something at the below part you will have to change everything that is on top of it. This may sound weird but I think that this is what happened to Bungie, having the initial Vault Space was something at the below part, even below that the consoles generation so now that they have to change those spaces, they have to change multiple things, even sacrifice some others because hardware problems (Xbox 360 and PS3 don't have the same memory to support, let's say, 100 items on the screen at the same time, the software may crash) that's why they remove the part where you can compare items and limit the boundaries to that number of max items. The funny part in it is that, in software, everything is possible, the only problem is that you have to get a good idea to relocate everything without losing too much and getting that idea sometimes may be harder than getting a Ghorn (LOL) so yeah, I think they will work still on it so we can have another alternative to keep more items at the game, they just need to get that idea and translate it into the game. With all of this there are still too many things where Destiny may be enhanced and that's why I'm asking Bungie to keep an eye on their community because we are the biggest and the best source of testing on their software, we are their best QA team, and the best of all, we are their customers. So I hope I was clear enough with all this explanation and that's why I'm congratulating Bungie (https://www.bungie.net/es/Forum/Post/111642468/0/0) because even though there are some barriers, they are able to find a way in order to succeed and have their community as happy as it is possible.

Agree

Yes! we use the vault to transfer weaps which is why i dont keep it completely full. Exactly what i was thinking when reading the weekly update. Happy for any increase, but im not sure they totally get it yet, seems they are slaves to their statistics.
