UPDATES 1-3, with TLDR/SUMMARY located at the bottom of the page.
Bungie,
Thank you! Thank you for hearing us, and giving us an increase in the vault space. Thank you for also giving us some details, statistics, and insights into how things look from your end. It is very helpful to us. We appreciate the detailed answer to our questions regarding the vault space. Hopefully you realize your work is not done.
I have spent a lot of time reading the feedback from the community regarding this matter. Many of your most loyal customers, your most invested fans, the most hard-core players, feel this increase is underwhelming. We feel this is not nearly enough to accommodate all the game has to offer currently, and especially not enough when future DLC is released. When HoW drops, we will be right back in the pain that we are currently feeling.
"JH: Very few people have completely full Vaults, but a lot of endgame players are bumping up against the limits. For example, 21% of players who are level 30+ have 4 or fewer free spaces in their weapon Vaults right now. The armor and general sections are slightly less full for most people, but not by much. Even at lower levels, there’s a small but measurable fraction of players under level 20 who have full Vaults. You could charitably think of them as “collectors” or uncharitably label them as “packrats,” but some people just flat out like holding onto their stuff."
The reason why our vaults are not full is because we have 3 characters full of stuff. We need the vault space in order to move things between our characters, that's why it's not completely packed full at the moment. A full vault doesn't give us the flexibility we need, so we leave some space open. Even then, the limited amount of gear that we have now is simply because we've been breaking down many duplicates that we would otherwise have wished to keep. The numbers that you're seeing, is a stripped down version of what many of us would like to keep, but are currently unable to because of the restrictive space. Are you looking at the statistics of how many items we had to dismantle in order to keep it down to those 4 empty spaces in the vault? What about the number of players using the Postmaster as extra storage space? For those players who like to hold on to their stuff, I don't see why that's a bad thing. If players want to have 3 copies of each exotic so they don't have to constantly switch between players, then the game should allow for that. Even if many people don't want to invest the time required to do that, lots of us do. Let us play your game as much as we want. The current restrictions do not allow your most loyal fans the breathing room they need.
"Different players have different needs, but our goal was to find a solution that could deliver more Vault space to the greatest number of people in the short term. Our challenge was to provide an increase in storage that fit within the memory constraints that limit how many items can be displayed on one screen."
Why does the Vault Space need to be limited to only one screen? There have been numerous posts in the forums suggesting the idea of having multiple screens in the vault, why have those been ignored? I agree you definitely need to address the most people in the shortest amount of time (7 months is short?) but don't ignore the top 21% of your loyal fans. We have needs too. :)
"We know there are a bunch of players in the world who don’t have enough space for Armor and General items. We’ll have a solution for you in the future."
In my earlier thread about our "1st World Problems", (https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/87629716/0/0) I asked for some temporary relief while you find a better long-term solution that will work with the current boundaries and constraints you are dealing with. I feel this qualifies as a temporary solution. Thank you! Now keep going, please. :) I'm very happy to hear that you agree this isn't enough.
"In the case of the Vault expansion, it became clear that we would be pushing very limited memory constraints on older generation hardware. We had a choice: leave the Vault as-is, or find some kind of compromise to enable it safely. We weighed the options, with player feedback in mind, and decided to move forward with the expansion by disabling the item comparison feature within the Vault on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Item comparison will continue to function within the Vault on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and in all other contexts on all platforms."
I found this to be particularly helpful in understanding why this has taken so long to implement. It sounds to me like you are running up against the boundaries of what is possible on the older platforms. If this is true, what hope does the future hold? Would giving the vault multiple screens push past those boundaries? In any case, thank you for giving us some idea of what challenges you are running up against, this helps us give you better feedback if we understand what is within the realm of possibility, and what isn't.
"We may not be making you as rich as Charlemagne, but those of you who have Vaults that are bursting at the seams with sweet loot are in for some relief. Stand by, because Update 1.1.2 arrives in April. As for what the future holds for Vaults, only a time traveler would know for sure."
Thank you for the temporary relief, it is appreciated. Very much. Please understand, this isn't nearly enough. Not by a long shot. I don't know the exact numbers, but there are way more unique items in the game than there are spaces between the vault, and 3 characters. If your most loyal players, your biggest fans, the cream of the crop, if they want to keep 3 copies of every exotic, every legendary from each raid, every legendary from the Iron Banner, and even some of their other favorite random Legendaries, as well as keep multiple stacks of consumables and other currency/materials, then this game needs to be able to accommodate that, or you will continue to lose your very best players, and be left with nothing but fair-weather fans, and medocrity. The reason why the community is so heated about this is because WE LOVE THIS GAME! We love what Destiny is, and have high hopes for what it can become. Right now, I feel like a disappointed parent, seeing how much potential my child has, knowing he is woefully underperforming his potential.
REQUEST TO THE COMMUNITY: I know you're pissed. We all are. This is the most disappointing news we've received in a long time. But please, try to keep things positive and helpful. Don't turn this into a flame war on Bungie, that's not helpful, not constructive. Thanks!
If you agree with this post, please Like and Comment. Keep bumping and trending!
UPDATE 1: Here is a fantastic idea: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0
UPDATE 2: Here is a summary of all of the ideas suggested by the community. Bungie, please review these and get back to us with your plan.
* By far, the best solution: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0 Not only is what we want, but this is also what the game needs. This will definitely put this issue to rest once and for all.
* If single screen gives legacy support issues, then break up the vault into multiple screens. If 60 can safely be displayed, give us 60 primary weapons, 60 special weapons, 60 heavy weapons, 60 helmets, 60 gauntlets, 60 chest, 60 legs, 60 consumables, 60 materials, 60 shaders, 60 ships, etc. Break them out into tabs so it's not all on one screen.
* Give us an online only vault. Make it accessible only by the companion app, or by bungie.net - that would also remove legacy conerns.
* Break out the vault into the 3 different consoles in the tower where the vault currently sits. Have each tower be a different category. This would also be a temporary fix until you can implement a permanent vault fix.
* Remove stack limits on General items such as 20 for ammo synths, 200 for planetary materials, etc.
* Put an additional vault in the Reef when the new social space goes live.
* Allow the vendors to sell bags that can hold multiple items, but be stored in one inventory square.
* Make adjustments to materials - see this thread: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/112786601/0/0
* Give each character their own individual vault in addition to the shared vault for all 3 characters.
* Above all, please don't wait another 7 months to address this again. A game based entirely around loot should not force it's most loyal players to dismantle the majority of the loot we'd like to keep. That makes this entire grind pointless.
Community, did I miss anything?
Bungie, we hope you find these solutions helpful. Please communicate with us. Thank you!
UPDATE 3: Here is my vault: http://imgur.com/JvL273l This is pre-HoW. My characters are full as well.
TLDR/SUMMARY:
1. Thank you for the upcoming vault increase!
2. The increase is not enough to accommodate all the game currently has to offer. Especially not after new DLC.
3. We don't have full vaults because we need empty spaces to properly use the vault. Re-evaluate this need. It does exist.
4. We are being forced to dismantle most of the loot we find. (in a game based entirely around loot, makes it frustrating)
5. Don't limit the vault to 1 screen. Will that work with last gen consoles?
6. 1.1.2 Update is only a temporary band-aid for a bullet-hole sized problem.
7. We love this game! We are excited to see what it can become!
8. The vault space concept that will put this issue to rest once and for all: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0
9. Other ideas mentioned by the community.
10. Picture of current player's vault.

I'm not disappointed with the increased compacity. But I knew the community would, Bungie could give us a terabytes worth of vault space and we would still complain. They can bend over to every single demand we make and there will still be complaining!

Edited by Stryker Shaka: 3/27/2015 3:43:04 PMThis is great stuff. Bump for comprehensiveness and thanks for speaking for us. The "full-vault" thing really irked me. It shows me that Bungie isn't really paying attention to how we're using it in the first place. I need 5-6 slots open for transfer. If they played the game every day like some of us do, then they'd truly know this. Thanks again, Bump

Edited by sportsguy: 3/27/2015 3:42:33 PMGreat post. My very first thought after reading the update was that their analysis is flawed. Just looking at vaults does not tell the whole story, paint the whole picture. You covered the true issue very succinctly in noting that inasmuch as the space is used for storage, it is used more so for transfer. Simply put, the method for tracking the vast amount of weapons in the game is woefully inefficient and cumbersome. I'm hopeful they have already come up with a new idea and have begun creating it for a future release. So thank you Bungie, but.. about that future release... STOP SCREWIN AROUND AND MAKE IT SNAPPY!! :-)
-
I am happy that they finally got around to vault space. But the lack in the expansion of the vault is depressing. I am thankful that they have made what is said to be a temporary fix to the vault space but the game as a whole needs a lot of improvement. Vault space is hopefully just the tip of the iceberg in the next update. That hopefully will include raid fixes as well as them focusing on something other than PVP.
-
I would personally like them to just make the weapon inventory bigger and have it shared across all characters so they can be accessed instantly without using the vault to switch things around. Either this or the ability to move a weapon directly to another character bypassing the vault
-
Edited by Head hunter410: 3/27/2015 5:08:45 PMThank you! Best post! I was just saying to myself the reason my vault isn't full is because it's spread across all my characters! I could easily fill it up with armor and weapons! In fact I could fill up weapons and general x3 at least having 5 heavy weapon ammo synth on each character min, plus 5 more in the vault min at all times. (5x20=100 times use ) over kill? Maybe. I still have the pumpkin heads from Halloween, just saying. I'm a gun collector I want to have every single exotic, every single raid gun, every single legendary in the game. Yes I know, not everyone wants this, but there are so many guns in the game, I want to catch them all!!! - see what I did there? Lol. Also there should be a separated sections for materials, emblems, armor shaders and everything else ( general ). And maybe a separate section for sparrows and ghost, though right now not that many are needed for ghosts and sparrows.

This is the most well thought out and helpful post I've ever seen. The forums should consist of more people like this. Bungie you better take notice of this

Bears Bump!

I have literally just finished a thread about this. If you do the maths then this "increase" is pitiful and a complete slap in the face. Being greedy little shits with server space so that you have just enough space to play HOW. Disgrace is putting it lightly
-
Well written fair essay. I assume bungie knows this, bit silly to write how deej did but they will k know, I don't think they realised how much we would play the game haha
-
I have no open space in my vault. My Titan, Warlock and Hunter each have their own unique load outs and I transfer an item when it's absolutely necessary, like leveling up Gjallarhorn quickly or swapping Gjallarhorn because Gjallarhorn. So this is the bare minimum. I will be able to offload some Vault/Crota raid weapons once I get Docking Party and Ether Torch...but honestly after 7 months I expected a little more than this maybe a page or something. TLW: Bungie did the absolute minimum. Did you see the storage in thee Bloodborne Hunters Dream? That's how this game should be.
-
Bump!
-
Correct interpretation of the statistics provided. The ONLY reason we have 4 spots open is so that we can swap load outs between characters. I use completely different guns in PVE vs PVP and I use different PVP gun for different Characters. I have legendaries from DO that I refuse to dismantle. Legendaries from IB that aren't going anywhere. Have all the VOG weapons x 3 and half the CE weapons x 3 (don't care for the AR, Pulse, Fusion, Scout). All my characters have Snipers x 3 elements, LMG x 3 elements and Shotties x 3 elements. I like my Characters to be prepared for any burn situation NF, any raid or any bounty without needing to transfer stuff around. Now that I have taken to the Crucible I am trying to get my favorite Crucible weapons x 3 for my characters. I currently use 9/10 primary weapon slots on all characters (leave 1 open for blue engrams). Mailbox is holding weapons on all three Characters and my Vault does the 2-3 slots open trick. My entire crew stores weapons the way I do - we would all like multiple pages. 1 for each subclass of weapon.
-
I keep three open spaces in my vault to be able to switch weapons around. All three of my characters have 1-2 rows full of each weapon type of what I am keeping. I will say that dealing with lack of vault space has caused me to dismantle a ton of exotics and legendaries that I would've normally kept. I don't think the increases are representative of Bungie actually listening to the community and making a concerted effort to help the guardian community. I still have one ghost and none empty spaces. Sparrows? Why would anyone have that many sparrows. I still see that they are choosing not to fix the glitches in the raids, nor weapons like black hammer. Too little to late. Now with how, I'm sure they'll introduce all new glitches and issues. Meanwhile, we get a community focus message that means nothing to no one. Has anyone noticed we can't comment on the Destiny announcements anymore? Yeah, they're listening alright.
-
Are you guys finally seeing the trend? Bungie is a disappointment now, so good thing they can't touch halo anymore.
-
I was insanely happy until I saw the number of extra slots. Color me underwhlmed.
-
Edited by RealisticTrout5: 3/27/2015 7:16:52 PMWell said! I'm happy with the gun increase and item increase. I haven't had an issue with armor due to the fact all exotic armor stays on each character so I can switch as I need to when playing. The weapons section needed that boost and so did the items. I thought it was funny when I couldn't put every exotic weapon in the vault at the same time......only one wouldn't fit. With the items, I have wanted to store heavy ammo synth and telemetry packs, and now we finally have that extra space to do so. Well said Korgano* (fixed it!) and thank you Bungie for listening and improving on this matter that needed addressing.
-
Great post. +1

Edited by VoxNovo: 3/27/2015 12:56:35 PMThis is a well written post, and I agree that Bungie should find ways to allow us to keep more gear as the game continues to age, and more and more unique items become available. However, as someone who has at least one of every exotic, has basically a "full" vault and characters, I wouldn't characterize myself as "pissed" about what they've given us. I would always like more, but if I'm being honest 36 weapon slots will work for me for the time being. As HoW adds new items, then it may again become a problem. Then again, maybe I'll find old Exotics and Legendaries to no longer be useful and just shard them.
-
Edited by ThrobinMeatstick: 3/27/2015 12:08:55 PMDon't forget the recent trophy stats proving that it's only 25% of players who have reached lvl 30 and that only like 31% of all players have equipped one exotic gun/armor piece since launch.. which is crazy because XUR! Meaning people can't even farm coins properly anymore.. People still playing this game, farming mats or doin IB are the extreme minority. It's mostly just people with lvl 22's logging on to do 1 or 2 bounties on friday, then idling in orbit for another 3 hours. Game's dead and dying. HoW won't fix shit. It's a dlc, not an expansion. Edit: Real percentages and numbers from reddit post: Only 31.1% of Guardians have equipped a piece of Exotic gear. Only 23.8% of Guardians have worn Legendary/Exotic armor in every slot. Only 24.2% of Guardians have earned max Vanguard marks in a week, while just 16% have maxed their Crucible marks in a week. Only 23.1% of Guardians have reached rank 3 with the Vanguard. Only 19.2% of Guardians have completed a Raid. (NO WONDER they don't fix glitches but fix cheese! LOL) Only 16.9% of Guardians have maxed out a Warlock or Hunter subclass, and just 15.2% have maxed out a Titan subclass.
-
They say they have memory boundaries. Haha then how are they releasing these dlc's to old gen?...
-
Bump. I've dismantled everything I have received from the nightfall and raids for the last two weeks now. No point in keeping it even though I'd like to. Just not enough room to justify a legendary vanguard weapon. And that's too bad.
