UPDATES 1-3, with TLDR/SUMMARY located at the bottom of the page.
Bungie,
Thank you! Thank you for hearing us, and giving us an increase in the vault space. Thank you for also giving us some details, statistics, and insights into how things look from your end. It is very helpful to us. We appreciate the detailed answer to our questions regarding the vault space. Hopefully you realize your work is not done.
I have spent a lot of time reading the feedback from the community regarding this matter. Many of your most loyal customers, your most invested fans, the most hard-core players, feel this increase is underwhelming. We feel this is not nearly enough to accommodate all the game has to offer currently, and especially not enough when future DLC is released. When HoW drops, we will be right back in the pain that we are currently feeling.
"JH: Very few people have completely full Vaults, but a lot of endgame players are bumping up against the limits. For example, 21% of players who are level 30+ have 4 or fewer free spaces in their weapon Vaults right now. The armor and general sections are slightly less full for most people, but not by much. Even at lower levels, there’s a small but measurable fraction of players under level 20 who have full Vaults. You could charitably think of them as “collectors” or uncharitably label them as “packrats,” but some people just flat out like holding onto their stuff."
The reason why our vaults are not full is because we have 3 characters full of stuff. We need the vault space in order to move things between our characters, that's why it's not completely packed full at the moment. A full vault doesn't give us the flexibility we need, so we leave some space open. Even then, the limited amount of gear that we have now is simply because we've been breaking down many duplicates that we would otherwise have wished to keep. The numbers that you're seeing, is a stripped down version of what many of us would like to keep, but are currently unable to because of the restrictive space. Are you looking at the statistics of how many items we had to dismantle in order to keep it down to those 4 empty spaces in the vault? What about the number of players using the Postmaster as extra storage space? For those players who like to hold on to their stuff, I don't see why that's a bad thing. If players want to have 3 copies of each exotic so they don't have to constantly switch between players, then the game should allow for that. Even if many people don't want to invest the time required to do that, lots of us do. Let us play your game as much as we want. The current restrictions do not allow your most loyal fans the breathing room they need.
"Different players have different needs, but our goal was to find a solution that could deliver more Vault space to the greatest number of people in the short term. Our challenge was to provide an increase in storage that fit within the memory constraints that limit how many items can be displayed on one screen."
Why does the Vault Space need to be limited to only one screen? There have been numerous posts in the forums suggesting the idea of having multiple screens in the vault, why have those been ignored? I agree you definitely need to address the most people in the shortest amount of time (7 months is short?) but don't ignore the top 21% of your loyal fans. We have needs too. :)
"We know there are a bunch of players in the world who don’t have enough space for Armor and General items. We’ll have a solution for you in the future."
In my earlier thread about our "1st World Problems", (https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/87629716/0/0) I asked for some temporary relief while you find a better long-term solution that will work with the current boundaries and constraints you are dealing with. I feel this qualifies as a temporary solution. Thank you! Now keep going, please. :) I'm very happy to hear that you agree this isn't enough.
"In the case of the Vault expansion, it became clear that we would be pushing very limited memory constraints on older generation hardware. We had a choice: leave the Vault as-is, or find some kind of compromise to enable it safely. We weighed the options, with player feedback in mind, and decided to move forward with the expansion by disabling the item comparison feature within the Vault on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Item comparison will continue to function within the Vault on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and in all other contexts on all platforms."
I found this to be particularly helpful in understanding why this has taken so long to implement. It sounds to me like you are running up against the boundaries of what is possible on the older platforms. If this is true, what hope does the future hold? Would giving the vault multiple screens push past those boundaries? In any case, thank you for giving us some idea of what challenges you are running up against, this helps us give you better feedback if we understand what is within the realm of possibility, and what isn't.
"We may not be making you as rich as Charlemagne, but those of you who have Vaults that are bursting at the seams with sweet loot are in for some relief. Stand by, because Update 1.1.2 arrives in April. As for what the future holds for Vaults, only a time traveler would know for sure."
Thank you for the temporary relief, it is appreciated. Very much. Please understand, this isn't nearly enough. Not by a long shot. I don't know the exact numbers, but there are way more unique items in the game than there are spaces between the vault, and 3 characters. If your most loyal players, your biggest fans, the cream of the crop, if they want to keep 3 copies of every exotic, every legendary from each raid, every legendary from the Iron Banner, and even some of their other favorite random Legendaries, as well as keep multiple stacks of consumables and other currency/materials, then this game needs to be able to accommodate that, or you will continue to lose your very best players, and be left with nothing but fair-weather fans, and medocrity. The reason why the community is so heated about this is because WE LOVE THIS GAME! We love what Destiny is, and have high hopes for what it can become. Right now, I feel like a disappointed parent, seeing how much potential my child has, knowing he is woefully underperforming his potential.
REQUEST TO THE COMMUNITY: I know you're pissed. We all are. This is the most disappointing news we've received in a long time. But please, try to keep things positive and helpful. Don't turn this into a flame war on Bungie, that's not helpful, not constructive. Thanks!
If you agree with this post, please Like and Comment. Keep bumping and trending!
UPDATE 1: Here is a fantastic idea: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0
UPDATE 2: Here is a summary of all of the ideas suggested by the community. Bungie, please review these and get back to us with your plan.
* By far, the best solution: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0 Not only is what we want, but this is also what the game needs. This will definitely put this issue to rest once and for all.
* If single screen gives legacy support issues, then break up the vault into multiple screens. If 60 can safely be displayed, give us 60 primary weapons, 60 special weapons, 60 heavy weapons, 60 helmets, 60 gauntlets, 60 chest, 60 legs, 60 consumables, 60 materials, 60 shaders, 60 ships, etc. Break them out into tabs so it's not all on one screen.
* Give us an online only vault. Make it accessible only by the companion app, or by bungie.net - that would also remove legacy conerns.
* Break out the vault into the 3 different consoles in the tower where the vault currently sits. Have each tower be a different category. This would also be a temporary fix until you can implement a permanent vault fix.
* Remove stack limits on General items such as 20 for ammo synths, 200 for planetary materials, etc.
* Put an additional vault in the Reef when the new social space goes live.
* Allow the vendors to sell bags that can hold multiple items, but be stored in one inventory square.
* Make adjustments to materials - see this thread: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/112786601/0/0
* Give each character their own individual vault in addition to the shared vault for all 3 characters.
* Above all, please don't wait another 7 months to address this again. A game based entirely around loot should not force it's most loyal players to dismantle the majority of the loot we'd like to keep. That makes this entire grind pointless.
Community, did I miss anything?
Bungie, we hope you find these solutions helpful. Please communicate with us. Thank you!
UPDATE 3: Here is my vault: http://imgur.com/JvL273l This is pre-HoW. My characters are full as well.
TLDR/SUMMARY:
1. Thank you for the upcoming vault increase!
2. The increase is not enough to accommodate all the game currently has to offer. Especially not after new DLC.
3. We don't have full vaults because we need empty spaces to properly use the vault. Re-evaluate this need. It does exist.
4. We are being forced to dismantle most of the loot we find. (in a game based entirely around loot, makes it frustrating)
5. Don't limit the vault to 1 screen. Will that work with last gen consoles?
6. 1.1.2 Update is only a temporary band-aid for a bullet-hole sized problem.
7. We love this game! We are excited to see what it can become!
8. The vault space concept that will put this issue to rest once and for all: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0
9. Other ideas mentioned by the community.
10. Picture of current player's vault.

JLoco11 absolutely nailed it: "Simple math when it comes to guns: We have 126 spaces total for weapons. 28 known exotics (27 collectible right now since Fate of All Fools hasn't released to the public) 9 VoG guns 9 Crota guns 9 Arena guns 9 Trials of Osiris Guns 9 Current Queen guns 9 Iron Banner Guns 2 story/collectible weapons (Strangers Call, Murmur) that you could only get 1 time. 1 story collectible you can buy any time (Vestian Sidearm) There were 27 Vanguard weapons total There were 27 Crucible Quartermaster weapons total There are 12 guns that could drop in the Crucible now as an after game reward There were/are a total of 9 Faction weapons per faction for a total of 27 guns. The first Queen's Wrath event had 9 potential guns, but the event was only seen from 1 time. That's 187+ POTENTIAL Legendary or Exotic weapons someone could have collected. Obviously we don't need ALL of those and the majority would be dismantled, but considering how Bungie changes gun balance, which alters a set of weapons, it's a big reason why people will keep guns around. Remember how great the SUROS was? Remember how bad the Thorn & Bad Juju were? Remember when the 4th Horseman was useless, until people showed what it could do against Skolas during Arc Burn week? Remember when Fusion rifles ruled the crucible? Remember when the Fatebringer and Vision were stuck at 300 damage and people got rid of them for the Fang? Remember when Shotguns were pointless in PvE? Remember the Mythoclast being "stuck in time"? Or how many times changes to Fusion rifles inadvertently affected it? Have you rolled a Spear with Final Round since HoW? Nope Have you rolled a Felwinters Lie with Hammer Forged? Can't Will you ever get the Strangers Rifle from the game if you deleted it? Not unless you start a brand new character How many times did you run VoG to get a Foil/Fatebringer? How many Crota's did you kill to get a Crux? How long did it take for the Hawkmoon, Monte Carlo or 4th Horseman to drop as a PS exclusive? Could you afford to upgrade all your exotics when Xur was in the Tower for the Dark Below? And to suggest that because we don't use these, we should get rid of it? You played countless hours in a raid (the best game mode in the game), only to be told sacrifices have to be made? Just because the Auto Rifle nerf makes the Abyss Defiant less powerful, I should get rid of it? No, no, no. The stories Guardians could tell of how they earned their weapons, could probably trump the lack of story Destiny told us. We need vault space, because Bungie's weapon balancing always shifts the power to different weapons. Sure, let's dismantle the Red Death... only to see it buffed into a monster. Let's dismantle that Truth because the Ghorn destroys it... only to see how well it tracks in PvP. How about getting rid of that pre HoW gun because you can't roll it to perfection even though it has better stats than current weapons. If Guardians really wanted to make "a hard choice", they will just play something else."

I love their solution for lack of items space. Creating more and more useless, only good for one thing, items! HoW alone had so many of these things, which was AFTER the vault increase. Soon after, but they knew it was an issue already and continued with it. Glad this older thread was bumped!
-
Yeah I don't really get why they made a game with so much loot and so little storage. Blows my mind how does that even get screwed up so bad.
-
This is the single most annoying thing about destiny for me (not the only one mind) NOT ENOUGH SPACE!!!!!! BUMP
-
-
If you are wandering there are 46 unique weapons from exotics, Crota, and Vault. Not sure about ToO and PoE
-
Bump!

Bump cause I'm tired of wasting time trying to figure out what to delete so I can switch stuff around.

Edited by HaPpYDude007: 6/7/2015 3:35:43 PMBump. Really trying to keep Mumur, Strangers Rifle, and new Queen weapons. In beginning I used Mumur and Strangers Rifle as a placement to transfer other weapons between characters. Got rid of 2 of each retroactively as time went on. Now these two weapons take up my last spaces in vault. I sharded a few multiple exotics recently, (red deaths, plan Cs old and new, older suros', until game gave me new updated DMG ones). I've had to destroy some rather unique legendary weapons that I wanted to keep. I deleted TPKNY, a void Against All Odds (really regretting now for Skolas, kept solar one), secret handshake, deleted multiple new pulse rifles, older Queens weapons (hate myself for that). I'm seriously thinking of destroying most of new disappointing state-wise Queens weapons since they are underwhelming except for shotgun, rocket launcher, and when I get it, her sniper rifle. This is big failure on Bungie's game design. For a game that's touted with all these unique weapons, they could not forsee the gun collecting? Is this a shooter MMO RPG or no? Could they not forsee this issue and study how Diablo or other games death vault space? I have multiple packages sitting at postmaster waiting to be opened from all factions with all three characters because I'm afraid to find more weapons. I spend now 30 min deciding on how to transfer weapons to what characters instead of playing damn game. Now they added d all these new consumables that now my vault consumables is maxed and my characters have synths weapon accelerators taking up so much space. Brilliant design. It's getting to point where I may stop playing until vault space is resolved. HoW, Iron Banner, Crucible, Trials, Exotics, new faction weapons.... Too much. I'm happy to discuss with Bungie or be a beta tester. Whatever it takes. Just hop my Gjallarhorns stay intact.

Great and well thought-out post.
-
Having a great time with the game. I love my weapon and armor collection. I'm already pretty short on space, even deleting some weapons I know I'll never use. Basically, I'm left with raid legendaries and exotics...and I barely have any space to spare across my characters and vault. Could you add a second page to the vault or something? The expanded weapon storage is lovely, however I have plenty of armor too. Considering we can Ascend whatever our favorite gear is (I love the VOG titan set, watering can helmet and all), I'm already seeing how cramped my inventory is going to be! I don't think VASTLY INCREASED storage capacity is an irrational request, considering how varied the weapon offerings are.

This post got 700 reply, but you cannot see it in Comminty wish list. Because they simply cannot fix it....

agree we Need more vault space I like the concept you have (bullet point #8) I need vault space bad. also see my petition https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/119127666/0/0

Edited by DarkManatee: 6/10/2015 10:09:28 AMOh... ok tl;dr. I'm not hardcore though I use 1 hunter and my weapon space in the vault is nearly full. Just from my exotic collection. ...In a world where bungie cares
-
If bungie wanted us to play/have fun, they would have simply created a universal inventory accessible to all characters, hence no need to accumulate 3x the same weapon and waste hours changing artillery. But a "solution" from bungivision must by definition include the "be online longer" component and not the "have more fun" one. Hence all solutions imply having players spend more time online, either lfg, at tower, in orbit, in matchmaking... The vault space was never an issue, it was always a means to have us wonder around for longer. Now considering the complexity of such an architecture, coding the vault so that they are universal is impossible for them, too costly. But if you look at what they're doing for destiny 2 you see how little interest they have for making our gaming experience better, as you will have no option to move weapons from one character to another, each character will have his own vault... (Shows you how little content they have developed... And one more reason for me to completely disregard the release of such baits). At least the good point is you know the game itself will be crap since there is way too much attention paid to commercial and marketing elements but not to the have fun part. That said, the only thing that could stop bungivision from doing whatever they want is I believe a rival company coming out with a game that addresses 90% of the complaints, which I believe is rather easy: destiny is all about thorn in crucible (and gally in pve), and bugged raids. If those two weapons that everyone complains about weren't there then no one would still be playing this game. And if the raids weren't bugged we would have all finished playing the VOG in October, and Crota in January. See what I mean? It's all commercial means to keep people online longer.

Bump.

There should be enough space for one char to hold every exotic item in storage. (Including other class exotics)
-
Edited by Magnetronx: 6/9/2015 6:17:07 AMBump. We need more vault space. Mine isn't full, i have to leave a couple of empty spaces so i can move things around between characters, all my characters have full weapon slots and new weapons go to the postmaster, i cant access these as all slots are full :( It isnt all about collecting either, we need different weapons for different situations Vog raid needs oracle disruptor weapon set Crota raid needs hive disruptor weapon set Pve needs solar, arc and void variants Nightfalls need different variants depending on the weeks modifiers. Pvp needs variants with different specs and perks for different maps. Trials need different variants Poe needs different weapons to match the modifiers and bosses. Also with the regular nerfing and weapon 'balancing' we have to keep some weapons in case they become viable at the next round of nerfs.

bump i'm sad that i dismantled almost every vanilla guns due to the fact that you couldn't upgrade them and that the vault was always full.
