UPDATES 1-3, with TLDR/SUMMARY located at the bottom of the page.
Bungie,
Thank you! Thank you for hearing us, and giving us an increase in the vault space. Thank you for also giving us some details, statistics, and insights into how things look from your end. It is very helpful to us. We appreciate the detailed answer to our questions regarding the vault space. Hopefully you realize your work is not done.
I have spent a lot of time reading the feedback from the community regarding this matter. Many of your most loyal customers, your most invested fans, the most hard-core players, feel this increase is underwhelming. We feel this is not nearly enough to accommodate all the game has to offer currently, and especially not enough when future DLC is released. When HoW drops, we will be right back in the pain that we are currently feeling.
"JH: Very few people have completely full Vaults, but a lot of endgame players are bumping up against the limits. For example, 21% of players who are level 30+ have 4 or fewer free spaces in their weapon Vaults right now. The armor and general sections are slightly less full for most people, but not by much. Even at lower levels, there’s a small but measurable fraction of players under level 20 who have full Vaults. You could charitably think of them as “collectors” or uncharitably label them as “packrats,” but some people just flat out like holding onto their stuff."
The reason why our vaults are not full is because we have 3 characters full of stuff. We need the vault space in order to move things between our characters, that's why it's not completely packed full at the moment. A full vault doesn't give us the flexibility we need, so we leave some space open. Even then, the limited amount of gear that we have now is simply because we've been breaking down many duplicates that we would otherwise have wished to keep. The numbers that you're seeing, is a stripped down version of what many of us would like to keep, but are currently unable to because of the restrictive space. Are you looking at the statistics of how many items we had to dismantle in order to keep it down to those 4 empty spaces in the vault? What about the number of players using the Postmaster as extra storage space? For those players who like to hold on to their stuff, I don't see why that's a bad thing. If players want to have 3 copies of each exotic so they don't have to constantly switch between players, then the game should allow for that. Even if many people don't want to invest the time required to do that, lots of us do. Let us play your game as much as we want. The current restrictions do not allow your most loyal fans the breathing room they need.
"Different players have different needs, but our goal was to find a solution that could deliver more Vault space to the greatest number of people in the short term. Our challenge was to provide an increase in storage that fit within the memory constraints that limit how many items can be displayed on one screen."
Why does the Vault Space need to be limited to only one screen? There have been numerous posts in the forums suggesting the idea of having multiple screens in the vault, why have those been ignored? I agree you definitely need to address the most people in the shortest amount of time (7 months is short?) but don't ignore the top 21% of your loyal fans. We have needs too. :)
"We know there are a bunch of players in the world who don’t have enough space for Armor and General items. We’ll have a solution for you in the future."
In my earlier thread about our "1st World Problems", (https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/87629716/0/0) I asked for some temporary relief while you find a better long-term solution that will work with the current boundaries and constraints you are dealing with. I feel this qualifies as a temporary solution. Thank you! Now keep going, please. :) I'm very happy to hear that you agree this isn't enough.
"In the case of the Vault expansion, it became clear that we would be pushing very limited memory constraints on older generation hardware. We had a choice: leave the Vault as-is, or find some kind of compromise to enable it safely. We weighed the options, with player feedback in mind, and decided to move forward with the expansion by disabling the item comparison feature within the Vault on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Item comparison will continue to function within the Vault on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and in all other contexts on all platforms."
I found this to be particularly helpful in understanding why this has taken so long to implement. It sounds to me like you are running up against the boundaries of what is possible on the older platforms. If this is true, what hope does the future hold? Would giving the vault multiple screens push past those boundaries? In any case, thank you for giving us some idea of what challenges you are running up against, this helps us give you better feedback if we understand what is within the realm of possibility, and what isn't.
"We may not be making you as rich as Charlemagne, but those of you who have Vaults that are bursting at the seams with sweet loot are in for some relief. Stand by, because Update 1.1.2 arrives in April. As for what the future holds for Vaults, only a time traveler would know for sure."
Thank you for the temporary relief, it is appreciated. Very much. Please understand, this isn't nearly enough. Not by a long shot. I don't know the exact numbers, but there are way more unique items in the game than there are spaces between the vault, and 3 characters. If your most loyal players, your biggest fans, the cream of the crop, if they want to keep 3 copies of every exotic, every legendary from each raid, every legendary from the Iron Banner, and even some of their other favorite random Legendaries, as well as keep multiple stacks of consumables and other currency/materials, then this game needs to be able to accommodate that, or you will continue to lose your very best players, and be left with nothing but fair-weather fans, and medocrity. The reason why the community is so heated about this is because WE LOVE THIS GAME! We love what Destiny is, and have high hopes for what it can become. Right now, I feel like a disappointed parent, seeing how much potential my child has, knowing he is woefully underperforming his potential.
REQUEST TO THE COMMUNITY: I know you're pissed. We all are. This is the most disappointing news we've received in a long time. But please, try to keep things positive and helpful. Don't turn this into a flame war on Bungie, that's not helpful, not constructive. Thanks!

UPDATE 1: Here is a fantastic idea: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0
UPDATE 2: Here is a summary of all of the ideas suggested by the community. Bungie, please review these and get back to us with your plan.
* By far, the best solution: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0 Not only is what we want, but this is also what the game needs. This will definitely put this issue to rest once and for all.
* If single screen gives legacy support issues, then break up the vault into multiple screens. If 60 can safely be displayed, give us 60 primary weapons, 60 special weapons, 60 heavy weapons, 60 helmets, 60 gauntlets, 60 chest, 60 legs, 60 consumables, 60 materials, 60 shaders, 60 ships, etc. Break them out into tabs so it's not all on one screen.
* Give us an online only vault. Make it accessible only by the companion app, or by bungie.net - that would also remove legacy conerns.
* Break out the vault into the 3 different consoles in the tower where the vault currently sits. Have each tower be a different category. This would also be a temporary fix until you can implement a permanent vault fix.
* Remove stack limits on General items such as 20 for ammo synths, 200 for planetary materials, etc.
* Put an additional vault in the Reef when the new social space goes live.
* Allow the vendors to sell bags that can hold multiple items, but be stored in one inventory square.
* Make adjustments to materials - see this thread: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/112786601/0/0
* Give each character their own individual vault in addition to the shared vault for all 3 characters.
* Above all, please don't wait another 7 months to address this again. A game based entirely around loot should not force it's most loyal players to dismantle the majority of the loot we'd like to keep. That makes this entire grind pointless.
Community, did I miss anything?
Bungie, we hope you find these solutions helpful. Please communicate with us. Thank you!
UPDATE 3: Here is my vault: http://imgur.com/JvL273l This is pre-HoW. My characters are full as well.
TLDR/SUMMARY:
1. Thank you for the upcoming vault increase!
2. The increase is not enough to accommodate all the game currently has to offer. Especially not after new DLC.
3. We don't have full vaults because we need empty spaces to properly use the vault. Re-evaluate this need. It does exist.
4. We are being forced to dismantle most of the loot we find. (in a game based entirely around loot, makes it frustrating)
5. Don't limit the vault to 1 screen. Will that work with last gen consoles?
6. 1.1.2 Update is only a temporary band-aid for a bullet-hole sized problem.
7. We love this game! We are excited to see what it can become!
8. The vault space concept that will put this issue to rest once and for all: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0
9. Other ideas mentioned by the community.
10. Picture of current player's vault.

This is by far the most disappointing news I've heard since it's release. I have been waiting patiently and impatiently, imagining that after such a long time (several months) and having to delete so many exotics and weapons that when the vault space came, it would be all I needed. Forget the awful weapon NERF, buffs needed, lack of story - content, raid glitches and the list goes on. This was my main concern and OMG, it still is! I had to wait 7 months for a few more spaces? There had to be a way where the vault can be broken down into sections so that adequate space can be obtained. If you cannot so this...why continue to play? Why? Why grind for these weapons and gear only to have to delete others you worked hard for and treasure to make room for more? I have felt for a long time that it's not making sense for me to even keep playing. I'm almost hoping that I don't find what in looking for, because when I do, I will have to delete another item I cherish. Why? Why would you create such an inadequate system and take this long to "not even fix it"? This is barely a temporary solution. I couldn't believe what I read when I saw the new proposed vault space. I was so hurt even. I love this game and have worked to hard to have 3 of a particular exotic and take the time to level them all up so I don't have to switch back and forth between characters. The new vault space is so limited still, that I might as well just start deleting more duplicate exotics. I don't want to...I HAVE TO. It's that or don't play. It doesn't seem right that your most dedicated players should feel abandoned by you and your game. So what now? A few more spaces? Yeah got it, but then what and most of all .....WHEN? When can we see a real expansion of the space that we need to hole exotic weapons/legendary weapons/ exotic and legendary gear/shaders/materials/ships/emblems? This is a true disappointment. I'm just one guy, I guess one of the 21% of players that have to use the post master to hold my gear. Maybe destiny is telling us NOT to play their game. Go get a different one, because we cater to the casual player. Go outside. Do something....but you can only play our game if you don't mind not being able to carry what you find. True disappointment

I think you put more effort into your feedback than Bungie put into the mild upgrade.

Bump again because this needs to happen

The day they update the vault space, I'll have a full vault. Currently I've had to resort to having many weapons permanently stored on my three characters because there was no room in the vault. Now I'll finally be able to free up some space on my characters, but the vault will be instantly full. I have all exotics, all but one raid weapon, and about half of the Iron Banner weapons. I hope this is a short term solution as you mentioned because after they add new exotics and a new raid full of weapons there just won't be enough room. I even resorted to keeping 3 of every weapon I use weekly to prevent having to put them in the vault to switch characters (Because my vault was full months ago).

Best feedback post ive read in a while, good job dude I agree 100%

Bump again because awesome.

can I like this post? Where's the like button bungee? ok maybe you can't use what Facebook is using because of copyright issues, but I totally agree with this guy, kudos to him. Im not much of an avid forum poster, but what this guy is saying makes a whole lot of sense. Once comet comes out and new weapons come out, where are we going to store all of our weapons? what if we want to keep our old shadow prices, and vanquishers with field scout. What if we're holding onto exotics hoping that there will be a trade system? what if we want to store up more heavy ammo synthesis in our vault? LIke come on bungie! You gotta think for the later future, not the near future. Im betting once house of wolves does come out, we are going to be having the same problem. I like that you are increasing the vault space, but there has to be more. I've been playing destiny for a while now. I was even around for the Queens Guard event!!! Why don't we have any more events like the Queens Guard? Im getting quite tired of the Iron Banner... And now that you have buffed the pulse rifles so much, last iron banner was hella stupid...I had to use Red Death the WHOLE time! My vex mythoclast, hard light, and Suros aren't worth their exotic status in the crucible anymore...Pulse Rifles beat me everytime I use them. EVERY SINGLE TIME. I want to see an improvement on your future updates bungie. I hope to see new weapons types too. Why don't we have anything like the Spartan laser in halo 3 and beyond. Something like a "Beam rifle", (A sniper rifle/laser rifle in the heavy slot). All in all, we need more weapons, we need more content, we need better updates, not lazy ones, and above all we need more love, love for this game. I really love this game, and if you did too, you'd do something about it.

This still needs to be addressed. Don't let it fall down the list of trending and highest rated!

xEMIx Korgano, Nice post. I do agree with most of what you said. Silly analogy, but my 9 year old made it and he is on point. He said it's like you paid for a 24oz soda when you ordered your meal, but they only gave you a 16oz soda when it was ready. Then you tell them about it, so they dump the 16oz soda into a 24oz cup and hand it back to you. Then they sell you on an upgrade to a 44oz, only fill it with 32oz and give you a coffee stir straw to drink it with. It's not that we can't work with it, it's just the point we paid for it, and it seems like they are trying to make it as difficult as possible for us to enjoy what we were promised and for what we paid for. Not bad logic for a 9 year old...too bad the game devs haven't figured that out

Anyone who believes their blatant LIE that PS3s and 360s just can't handle any more items in a vault is a subhuman, buttkissing, fanboy retard. Use your fracking brain. The inventory systems on some SNES games is more advanced than Destiny's system, and that's on hardware that's well over 20 years old. You're really telling me that systems which can handle Skyrim and Oblivion can't handle remembering a reasonable number of weapons? It's just a few pieces of information each - the weapon name, its rolled perks, the experience gained with it so far, and the selected upgrades. Any half-wit, first year programmer could easily structure and store thousands of items with that much information in a way that even basic computers from 15 years ago could handle.
-
4 more spaces!! You have to be kidding me!!! What a waste of time! Don't even bother! Here's a better idea!... How about making the venders capable of changing the stats and perks on any item? See the reason why vault space is needed is because we want to try different builds and because we want to have extra ammo or faster reload for any weapon. Pretty damn simple! Seriously what is wrong over there? Why is everything so damn hard for you guys? In all my years playing games I have never seen any company so hell bent on self destruction. 1.Nerf anything that people enjoy! 2.If you love the game so much you are forced to destroy your rewards because of bag space? 3.No way to customise what you get and the purchasable items are so limited. 4.you fix cheese before you fix bugs. That's just a couple examples. Get rid of your statistics team and hire some people who can address the flaws rather than nerf everything to appease the PVP element that so few even play. Rant over!
-
Bungie doesn't care about Destiny. I appreciate you trying, but it's a lost cause with these fools. Luke Smith and the rest of the team has been smashing out the new Dark Souls: Bloodborne all last week instead of even bothering to produce a thought about Destiny.

Having read the weekly update, as a programmer, I'm left scratching my head as to the "memory restriction" used as explanation regarding vault space limitations. It makes absolutely no sense. I'm aware each weapon may have its own unique ID, meaning all stats must be assigned to the ID when upgrading, but this isn't a limitation that should restrict the vault space. By all impression, stats should be stored outside of the weapon, which I'm assuming is done on Bungie's servers. No, I can't say there's a memory limitation, but rather, a design limitation. It's quite clear the vault's UI isn't scalable, which means it's a fixed width, and there's no way to expand it because it's part of the source. This is proven by looking at every other element of the game, most notably the vendors, who, despite having multiple weapons in the game, can never supply them all at once because there's no way to add a scrolling screen. Perhaps the developers thought people would simply keep a few of their favorites and break down everything else. This makes sense, but it also explains why people have far, far, far more weapon parts and armor parts than they'll ever use (those aren't unique, explaining why we can get into the 1000s). Ammo was intentionally capped, though the reason remains unclear. When I left Destiny months ago, I tired of the grind of the game. I still keep my ear to the ground, hoping game-changing news will appear, but this latest update is read as an insult, not an explanation. The game wasn't designed very well, but rather than admit that, we get "memory limitations on older consoles", which is laughable considering nothing about the game is stored in the console's memory when we're off the Tower (what, does the vault follow us?) The effort of explaining was nice, to a degree, but it's really not what people want. I loved the soda analogy used, because that's pretty much what's going on. We're not gaining any vault space at all. Instead, things are just shifted to give the impression because the design can't be changed. The most disappointing part of this realization is that, while there were weapons I wouldn't use again in battle, keeping some of those I did use as a memory of my adventure would have been nice. When I play Skyrim, for example, I don't toss out the bows I use once I find something better. Instead, I put them on display in my house. Because that's what adventurers do. So, when is Destiny 2 coming out? I think, honestly, this is the only way Destiny gets fixed. Want to bet developers keep a copy of this game on their PCs for nostalgia's sake? Well, doesn't look like I'll be returning to the game anytime soon. A shame. To be honest, I do miss it. Sadly, the elements which take the fun away from this game are still persistent, and it doesn't look like they're going to get fixed. Programmer, out.
-
I like the post, its constructive. However, i feel as if the update was proposed as a long-term solution. Having taken a couple of months to reach a less than optimal solution that, realistically, is a temporary solution, i cant see bungie taking the time out of their evidently busy schedule to fix it again any time soon. The fact is, they gave us FOUR, FOUR more spaces for armor and misc items. The weapon space increase is acceptable for now, but going forward my needs will only increase and my vault is currently full anyway on the weapons partition. It's genuinely not satisfactory, and reading this dissapointment on a post labelled 'vaulting the bar?' Its like theyre trying to deliver the most frustrating, ineffective tweaking to a game ever dreamt up.
-
I actually dismantled a ton of shit i wanted to keep just so I can have a full vault. Its full and was full 4 weeks ago when I last touched this game..
-
I keep seeing these posts pop up so I keep posting my thoughts on it. Very good post. I love the snapshot of the independent vaults. It will make inventory much cleaner.
-
Thanks for tipping me to your post Korgano, I liked how well written it was. One thing I always thought was odd is how there are three vault pillars in the tower but they all go to the same place. Maybe the actual vault is underground but that is beside the point. One solution and I thought of would be to divide each one into it's own vault, independent of each other. Each of the vault pillars could be divided into separate vaults the same way we have it now, or one for armor, one for weapons, one for other which might be easier on the app. In the HoW DLC, after helping the Queen, we could ask for a vault or two in the reef, but that would be one more place to lose track of that item we were looking for. Still, the simplest solution would be add multiple pages in the vault. Not one per armor or weapon category, that is too complicated. I cannot pretend to know what it is like to program a game then reprogram like many people on these forums claim to be experts in, but hopefully Bungie already know and are looking for another solution, giving us a temporary one in the meantime.
