They were always random.
The only thing you can know is which item class they are, i.e. Gauntlets, Helmets, etc.
The rest is up to random. If it's gauntlets for example, you can know at least that it will be either Sunbreakers (Warlock), Ruin Wings (Titan), and the other gauntlets.
With the DLC, there are 12 exotic helmets, 7 chest armors, 6 gauntlets, and 2 leg armors.
