I have a hard time believing that it's possible for anyone to complete this Nightfall without hiding under the stairs or using some other cheese that I'm not aware of.
If you did it, post here and explain how.
I probably won't believe you anyway, but if you really did it, I'm impressed!
edit: The actual question is, did you do it without any kind of cheese whatsoever.
So, if you hid under the stairs or on top of the lights or did anything else other than face him straight up, your answer should be "NO".
next edit: I changed the title so people might stop misunderstanding the point of the question.
I think the answer is about 50/50, cheese/no-cheese.
The answer to no-cheese seems to be Titan bubble, weapons of light and gyllenhoorns, lots and lots of gajyllenhoorns.
I've done it that way on normal, but this time there were a ton more (and tougher) enemies in the room before Valus spawned.
The shields on the psions were ridiculous.
Hiding under the stairs made it a problem to use the gyllenhoorn but hunter invisibility helped a bit.
I'll try it again next time w/ a Titan.
Good thread. Thanks!
final edit: I guess different people have different definitions of "cheese".
IMO, hiding in a spot where you are enclosed on all sides and the enemy can't get to you at all (as long as you stand in the right spot), but you can still hit them, is "cheesy", meaning "cheap".
NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT.
Hey, I think using a fire team full of gajigglyhorns is kinda cheesy too, but whatever works.
I'm not judging anyone for playing cheesy - I do it all the time.
I guess what I mean by cheese is a strategy (legit or not) that takes most/all of the intended challenge and risk out of a task.
Sometimes, especially when it's a strike I've done a million times, I don't care about the challenge, I just want to get it done, so I do it the cheesiest way possible.
Other times the challenge and difficulty are what makes it fun.
In my opinion, it's your game and you can play it however you'd like - as long as it doesn't get you banned or piss off the people you're playing with (too much).
-
What if you can't play? No as well I guess. But I would go for the stairs. It is a good strategic vantage point. And you need all of those you can get while soloing.
-
Jumped on a lamp.
-
Two defender titans with 1 voidwalker/sunsinger/gunslinger=infinite supers
-
Defender, gunslinger and void walker. Unstoppable team for this particular nightfall.

It was harder than hell to get it done without cheesing, but we did it
-
We stay under the stairs when he is on that side but when he's not visible we don't wait for him to come back to shoot. We generally pop a bubble right where he initially comes out and tear shit up from there.

Edited by Muk Marine: 4/8/2015 10:39:10 PMYes, but I hid by the little room near the entrance door behind some boxes. With an Icebreaker randomly using invisiblity. So I'm still a scrub. Lol.
-
I just ran back and forth, top and bottom. Wasn't too bad.

Edited by Giozilla: 4/8/2015 10:36:06 PMBelieve me or not, right behind the crates on the right when you walk into Turac's room. Only thing that is important is that you don't move an inch back into the previous area or otherwise you spawn yellow phalanxs. Other than that, hide behind those crates when he's shooting rockets and be wary of the (few) enemies that can still hit you.
-
Personally I haven't tried to do it as a fireteam strategy so I can't say if I/we could. With everything one hit killing you and the yellow psions that's tough. However, your question has prompted me to try. I'll get back to ya.
-
I shot gunned him to death
-
Two titans and we would pop bubbles as shoot at him, took maybe ten minutes at the most
-
Its strategic advantage, not cheese.
-
Used the ramps and what look like roof supports for cover against his backpack rocket launcher
-
Outside map w armor piercing ldr
-
I just sat up above the stairs unloaded rockets and icebreaker. Rinse and repeat

Edited by Un1337ninj4: 4/8/2015 10:25:53 PMJust have your mates focus adds first and keep an eye on Valus. They systematically spawn in two separate groups based on time in the arena and his health. Manage them and you can control the fight with incredible ease with the slight exception of a Psion getting sneaky (Just use the Motion Tracker, especially Hunters, have Knucklehead.) Word of Crota helps a ton on the Psions. Solo? Ehm, probably not.
-
Edited by Erijian: 4/8/2015 10:26:24 PMYeah, I hid in a Bubble instead.
-
Just move around. I thought that should go without saying. Then I realize what forums I'm browsing.

When he's on one end of the hall you should be on the side of the hall. Titan bubble that creates more orbs makes it easy to keep supers for everyone. Plus Gally with Weapons of light takes him down quick. Had to hide under the stairs for my warlock. He's only a Lvl 30 tho.
-
I used my 29 warlock and played with a 31 warlock. we went on top of the stairs right when u walk in the room and fired rockets at valus while using void shottys on the adds. pretty simple if u ask me
-
It's not hard. For the amount of people that don't complete this strike it has the most hiding spots out of any end boss there is. Also staying together as a unit under right platform is a great strategy. Bring void weapons for Psion flayers shields. Bring word of Crota or maxed void shotgun. Ice breaker. Heavy with surplus. Bring one voidwalker. Or a titan ward of dawn. Gunslinger optional. Bladedancer is terrible choice. Safe zones: Immediate boxes at top of outside room ramp. (Directly there where you meet the two legionares) Behind boxes to right of Valus spawn. Behind boxes left of Valus spawn. There is no shame running and hiding when in trouble. But STAYING THE ENTIRE TIME WOULD QUALIFY.
-
Just use the center barrier to shoot rockets at him, then when he comes over to that side, just use to corner by the entrance for cover. It's very simple.
-
Yep I sit in the alcove to your right as you enter his room. Its the fastest way to kill him also. You have to hit and run but if you use the box when he comes to this side and avoid his rockets its a cakewalk. P.s When he's on his side you just use the large barricade for cover one at a time.

Can do without cheesing. Not possible without hiding at some point in some way, shape, or form, since that includes everything that blocks his attacks.
