I have a hard time believing that it's possible for anyone to complete this Nightfall without hiding under the stairs or using some other cheese that I'm not aware of.
If you did it, post here and explain how.
I probably won't believe you anyway, but if you really did it, I'm impressed!
edit: The actual question is, did you do it without any kind of cheese whatsoever.
So, if you hid under the stairs or on top of the lights or did anything else other than face him straight up, your answer should be "NO".
next edit: I changed the title so people might stop misunderstanding the point of the question.
I think the answer is about 50/50, cheese/no-cheese.
The answer to no-cheese seems to be Titan bubble, weapons of light and gyllenhoorns, lots and lots of gajyllenhoorns.
I've done it that way on normal, but this time there were a ton more (and tougher) enemies in the room before Valus spawned.
The shields on the psions were ridiculous.
Hiding under the stairs made it a problem to use the gyllenhoorn but hunter invisibility helped a bit.
I'll try it again next time w/ a Titan.
Good thread. Thanks!
final edit: I guess different people have different definitions of "cheese".
IMO, hiding in a spot where you are enclosed on all sides and the enemy can't get to you at all (as long as you stand in the right spot), but you can still hit them, is "cheesy", meaning "cheap".
NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT.
Hey, I think using a fire team full of gajigglyhorns is kinda cheesy too, but whatever works.
I'm not judging anyone for playing cheesy - I do it all the time.
I guess what I mean by cheese is a strategy (legit or not) that takes most/all of the intended challenge and risk out of a task.
Sometimes, especially when it's a strike I've done a million times, I don't care about the challenge, I just want to get it done, so I do it the cheesiest way possible.
Other times the challenge and difficulty are what makes it fun.
In my opinion, it's your game and you can play it however you'd like - as long as it doesn't get you banned or piss off the people you're playing with (too much).
-
Players considering everything a cheese if it doesn't involve you standing in front of the boss the entire time. If these were cheeses Bungie would of been patched them but they don't. Because it's there for a reason. As long as you don't glitch thru a wall than its not a cheese.
-
Using the boxes isn't cheese, they were were placed there to use as cover, do you really think Bungie just accidentally left a big Guardian sized hole near the ramp by accident? If it really was cheese, they would have patched it by now and it's not like you can just stay down there the whole time, I just use it as respite then once I'm recovered and have a good idea of enemy placements I jump out and run to hide behind some other boxes :p
-
Hiding under the stairs isn't a cheese. Even if it was, why waste time trying to do it straight up? Unless I knew I was getting a ghorn (the only exotic I don't have that I want) its just something to do. So far I've only done it with my titan and got 11 ascendant shards. Let's be honest most beta and day one players already have everything or close to it.
-
Bob and weave in between the pillars at the top of the stairs.
-
Hiding under the stairs isn't a cheese it's just using cover only stuff like glitching out of the map is cheeseing
-
It's not cheese people just take certain approaches in the nightfall
-
i was able to complete it (not solo though) without cheese by moving around, using the surroundings especially near or behind boxes for cover
-
Hiding under the stairs is a cheese? How? If you can hit him, he can hit you. Lamp? Have no clue where that is or how to get there.
-
Yup we Spammed him with three gjallarhorns. We all had 7 rockets then took a synth.
-
Able? Yes; I suppose. Care to "do it the hard way"? No. Been through the strike too many times (already) to really care; just wanted it done. Period.
-
Ill always cheese whatever, because I'd like to do like complete activities with the least of amount stress. If I tried facing valus tu arc in the open I will die alot and then it will frustrate me.
-
I always do it solo, so a bit of cheesiness is essential
-
I used the box room
-
If you didn't glitch out of the map then it isn't cheesing. It is literally a wide open area and you're constantly gonna get fired on so if using the entirety of the map is cheesing then call me the biggest cheeser because I did it on my Titan with a group and soloed it on my hunter! Behind the boxes/under the stair for life!!!
-
Is taking cover cheesing? In open spaces not like under the stairs on the left side
-
Finding cover is cheesing? GTFOH. Climbing through the ceiling? Yeah, that's odd to me (because when you die, either on the way there, or in your perch, I'm not coming to get you). Hiding behind boxes and using the environment to my advantage? Screw you. I want to live. I need to complete a strike without dying, and, well... Here we are at McDickface. I'm in no rush.
-
Swiss cheese
-
I try to do everything the easiest and quickest way at this point. I don't really feel the need to take my time, have fun, and enjoy a strike I've done a million times
-
No but it was only two of us
-
I think that taking cover somewhere is a legit tactic. If he's allowed to shoot unlimited rockets and an even extremely accurate minigun at me, then I'm allowed to hide under a ramp or on a lamp
-
I soloed it. I ran out onto the left platform, threw up a bubble with weapons of light, unloaded 7 rounds of Gally on his face, heavy ammo synth, unloaded another 7 rounds (by then he was down to almost 1/3 health, then ran under the stairs and sniped him for the rest of the match. Is that a cheese?
-
Since when do we coagulate, compress, and ripen curd of milk separated from the whey and turn it into food with Rocket McDickface?!
-
I just won't do it. That should be an option "don't need it". Don't coins. I hate grinding all those hours n then hit this wall of a nightfall, truck through it and get nothing.
-
Me and 2 clanmates did it with no stair hiding last night. Void primaries for scions, hunger of Crota and ice breakers for other adds and valus. Hide behind barrels and walls on top level with one person always on add killing duty. 2 of us running singer with hopf and Max discipline equals 12 fusion grenades each per radiance. Each super would drop about 1/8 of valus health. 3rd person was Titan running blessing to help with rocket splash damage. Dude was dead in less than 10
-
Idk how people can't beat it, it's easy
-
I just use those boxes on the right as soon as you enter the room as cover. No cheese. Just cover. No holes or jumping on top of things.
