Across all of the games I will murder your face off and completely and utterly destroy all comers if I'm playing Link or Samus. And then Zelda's someone I was pretty decent with (much more so in Brawl and Smash 4 than Melee) once she came along, and then in Smash 4, Palutena and Lucina were added to the characters that I will kick your butt off with, and Robin is someone I'm pretty decent with...and then Ike, ZS Samus, and Lucario are characters I know I can use competently, but I haven't really gotten to see how good I am with them yet since I've only used them when I've been fighting the computer so far.
In any case, my roster of characters that I always use are Link, Samus, Zelda, Robin, Lucina, Ike, Lucario, ZS Samus, and Palutena.

Link is boss, I don't usually use him though unless I'm playing serious and for keeps though since I'm so good with him...it gets way too easy if I use Link or Samus right off the bat :P

That's the way to go, though there are some characters that I will never use at all just because I suck so badly at figuring them out...or if they're someone I find annoying in general ^^'
