Spoiler alert. Either way I think it is kind of a strange book. I read it in the fifth or sixth grade thinking it was a children's book, but it has some pretty adult themes. Especially the next book.

He would've died eventually anyways. He was never a very good survivor. But there actually was a reason for his death, if I remember correctly. It'll show up in the later books.
