I was under the impression this was true but only before the blood first makes contact with air. Please explain; I'm probably wrong I believe things from books that may not be the most reliable of sources.

From what I know, oxygenated blood is the healthy red you know of, and when it has often rid of its oxygen, and is on it's way back to heart/lungs, it's a bit of a dark red/brownish color. Still red, but darker.
