1.1.2 hit special ammo in the crucible really hard, and disproportionately affects sniper rifles (due to how the weapons use ammo inherently). In preparation for the ammo nerf, I held on to several weapons with the surplus perk. Unfortunately, after doing some testing, I have concluded that SURPLUS is absolutely USELESS in the crucible. The following are ammo pickups in crucible with three very different rifles, with and without armor that increases ammo carrying capacity:
Praedyth’s Revenge (base mag = 4)
Field scout + armor = 6
Field scout – armor = 6
NO field scout + armor = 6
NO field scout – armor = 4
Longbow Synthesis with SURPLUS (base mag = 5)
Field scout + armor = 6
Field scout – armor = 6
NO field scout + armor = 4
NO field scout – armor = 3
Efrideet’s Spear with SURPLUS (base mag = 3) …I didn’t have field scout on this rifle
NO field scout + armor = 6
NO field scout – armor = 4

Edited by Dog_Of_War_1138: 4/17/2015 5:27:49 AMSurplus is a perk that increases the amount of drops from PvE enemies, not Crucible ammo drops. As I understand it, anyway. Ruin Wings are also useless in the Crucible, they have the same type of perk (increased heavy ammo drops). That's not how ammo drops work in the Crucible.

Edited by RichyWoo: 4/17/2015 5:30:49 AMJust out of pure scientific pig headedness... Did you count the number of ammo packages that dropped when you opened the chest with this perk active?.

Duh. No increased heavy drops in Crucible

you just showed that field scout does help....
