So apparently Bungie tried to patch the Archon Priest Strike in 1.1.2 without telling anyone and did it poorly. You can no longer snipe from above the Vex Waves spawn half way through the strike at all without risk of breaking the whole strike. I had read that you couldn't use the highest rock anymore so I wasn't even that far away. I was sniping from where you shoot the 4 goblins right when you first enter the area. I made it to the second wave just fine and then everything de-spawned and I had to go re-engage the door. After killing the first wave a second time nothing else spawned and I couldn't re-engage the door, I had to just go back to orbit.
Just trying to make some other people aware so others don't have to waste their time like I did. After some more research a decent way around this is to just leave one enemy and run down there to kill it then sprint back up to the top.
UPDATE: (Thanks beedel): "This is unintentional" per bungie: https://twitter.com/bungie/status/590576802713706496
Edit - added bold and attempted to clarify what is broken.

Edited by Gaheris: 4/21/2015 3:48:56 PMI soloed it 3 times today wih 3 different classes. I died once at that part with my warlock, not because of the snipers but because the monsters left alive teleported to where I was even before the 3 waves started. Weird as -blam!-. I think it was just a glitch, needs confirmation. I died 2 times because of the snipers one shotting me with my titans. Played very carefully on my third run and it went fine. Made a flawless run with my hunter. All in all, I just snipe/rocket the 3 waves behind the 2 boxes at the start of the bridge. There is really no need to go beyond that if you play carefully enough. Yes you'll be in the hobgoblins range but you can well deal with them if you crouch and take pot shots.

Edited by Corrick II: 4/21/2015 2:50:05 PMFor everyone saying we're such pansies for using the rock, Ok tough guys, you can get up close and personal with the hobgoblins when they spawn. I'm sure they'll be too scared to one-shot you because you're all such badasses. Or they'll just one-shot you anyway.
-
You all are being stupid. When you change one thing in the coding it could effect the way it interacts with other coding.
-
At least they're fixing cheeses
-
Easy fix would be to increase the detection abilities of the Hob Goblins AKA Vex Snipers and the Wire Rifle Vandals AKA Fallen Snipers. Keep their physical player detection range the same so that they don't sense you are there when you're already 1500ft away but make their detection fields sense bullets. This isn't unrealistic as a real person would hear the bullet fly past them and would see their friends die. The sniper enemies could then start taking cover to get a shot back on you but you should still be outside of any effective range of other guns... Good AI would make any normal enemy (not snipers) move more frantically trying to avoid a potential incoming round, or maybe even start taking cover based on direction of the shot... Maybe this is difficult to code into the game but that's why you're Bungie. The Developing company... figure it out. Don't take away a strategy/play style that isn't actual Cheesing (jumping onto the tower at the bridge in Crota's End to trick the game into thinking all active players are already on the ogre side).

Edited by l MF Dan l: 4/21/2015 3:48:08 PMYep. Really -blam!-s those of us over that solo the nightfalls.
-
You are a joke learn to play the game properly. When you have all burns and no light switch and you are sniping... It's just sad.
-
Looks like I won't be using ice breaker then
-
So why do we have sniper rifles again? Now it is just going to be a rocket hay day for me! Boom boom boom Bungie
-
Just send an invisi-hunter in to keep the spawns working. As long as one player is in the active zone, the encounter will function as normal
-
Same thing happened to me where i had to rengage the doors. Only thing is i was sniping from the fallen ships in the far back and after i deployed my ghost the third time (i didnt get what happened the 2nd and went back to the ships) everything went fine with me.

What's this spot everyone is going on about?I tend to dive in head first but I'm intrigued as to how this 'strategy' that everyone is defending so valiantly works? I'm asking an honest question here....
-
Edited by Chops: 4/21/2015 5:34:26 PMLittle do they no that I don't snipe from the rock, I snipe FROM THE KETCH! It's definitely the best angle if you can figure out how to get up there.
-
Edited by QuasarStarKnight: 4/21/2015 6:08:49 PMGod forbid you find a sniper position where you're able to use the gun how it's meant to be used, it's not like we were immune to damage up there anyways
-
I had the same problem! But I backed out of the nightfall and decided to stay away from the top of the rock. After that everything was smooth.
-
I never used this spot but this shotty patch job!? If I ever leave Destiny it's because the incompetency in one's own design!
-
As I said elsewhere, this was a stupid thing to try and half assedly fix. It was more stupid to think players wouldn't find a way around it almost instantly. "This isn't the way we wanted you to play." ...Why not? It's just a strategy using the level design and guns you put in... "...We don't even have time to explain why we don't have time to explain."

There is a few issues I have noticed as well. 1.If you snipe from the ship after the first wave is complete you will have to go back to the door and restart it again ( it can be a good thing if you want to farm glimmer) 2.also the first part of the mission once you clear the hydra and you go on to the next part there was only a captain. I did not read your whole post sorry so I don't know if you mentioned these things.
-
It's not broken, it just means people will have to stop standing in spots where they essentially can't get hit. Why do people want everything to be so easy, the game isn't difficult as it is, yet tons of people want to be lames and find an easy way out of every encounter. I don't understand haha.

Yea, kiting the boss to the beginning of the stage is strategy :/

I cycle the first spawn like 4 times before figuring out the work around. Kinda sick but whatever.

The reason this sucks so bad is because not everyone has people to play with. I usually solo the nightfalls because my friends and I always have conflicting schedules. Having to solo a nightfall means you can't afford to go Rambo on everything (although I'm sure some of you are going to say you do, we all know you don't), it means you need to find cover and play it safe. It isn't being a vagina, it's being a team player in the sense that you are the team, and you want to keep the team alive.
-
Wait... 2 days ago I done a ROC on "Winters Run" and had none of this I stood on the rock beside the bridge ( where the Hobgoblins are ,then emerge from the cave ) and the other two where on the top rock ( behind and to the right of the meal bridge ) >Sol

Edited by Blackhammer193: 4/21/2015 3:39:03 PMSmh...They weren't patching an error, just trying to stop people from "cheesing" by sniping everything from halfway across the map...
ppl iz smart
I don't always snipe in this level, but when I did I always enjoyed it. It seems like this portion was made to snipe. This was one of my favorite battles because you could actually arrange your fireteam to more or less triangulate fire from 3 different vantage points. Not anymore. There's so many different things they need to fix, yet they do this one. Let the hobgoblin snipers return fire! That's not a crazy idea. Why is their range so limited? It really boggles my mind that they did this.

Myself and two others ran it 3 times tonight all appeared to be as normal.
