does technology make us more lonely or less lonely?

Technology is helpful because we can stay in touch with family and friends, through multiple ways of social media, it's supposed to make us more connected, but in the last few decades loneliness is a lot more common, and this is greatly affected due to technological advances. it prevents us from connecting with other humans and having "real" conversations, do you think technology makes us more lonely or less lonely?

  • It wasn't that long ago that the only 3 ways to reach out to friends or family that were distant were to take a trip, write a letter (snail mail) or call them long-distance from your landline to theirs (which was not cheap and you typically saved those for special occasions). We weren't lonely then, but we did tend to have more friends closer to home and spent time face-to-face with them. Now? It's possible to know people and even be friends with folks all over the globe. It certainly is different, but I wouldn't say that it is any more (or less) lonely. People who are lonely only need to get up out of the chair and find, make or get together with friends if they want to change their situation. The "old school" method of having friendly neighbors or friends nearby still works, and it works well provided someone is willing to get up off of their ass.
