Alright yeah that makes sense. How'd they get to Earth before Chief though, seeing as Chief left before them in a forerunner dreadnought?

While Chief did arrive in Sol first, his presence onboard the Keyship forced Truth to order the ship in orbit around the Covenant controlled Mars, lest he wanted to bring the Covenant's greatest enemy into the heart of their operations. During this event, Johnson and Miranda arrived on Earth, presumably by a Sangheili warship.

thx m80 Oh, also, they thought they killed the Chief, which is why they ended up making landfall on Earth at the beginning of Halo 3.
