Echoes Chapter 2 (Part II): The Doubtful

"The Vanguard never took me serious. I was a mere pup, an ignorant child to them. But they didn't know what I knew, nor did they listen when I tried to warn them. Now...now I think it's too late." The Hunter Vanguard shoved Archangel towards the table. "Are you out of your mind!?" Cayde shouted as he walked to his console. "This is the third altercation you've had in the tower in fifteen days! What is wrong with you?" The exo was severely agitated, and Archangel knew it. Though, it bothered him little. He had a habit of angering the Vanguard. "What's wrong with me? How about you put your emissaries in tighter leashes!" Archangel shouted back furiously. Zavala thundered through the corridor, an aura of arc energy surrounding him to make his anger prominent. "That's enough Archangel! You will watch your mouth, or you will face the consequences. You're already in enough trouble as it is, so stand there and stay quiet!" Archangel was about to reply when he saw Cayde shake his head in disagreement. Now was not the time, so he took heed and kept his mouth shut. "Now..." the titan spoke as he rounded the table in the middle of the room, "We have summoned you for a reason, and you'd do well to listen." "We know of your venture to the moon, and your altercation with the Hive sect known as 'The Black Death'." Ikora Rey, the Warlock Vanguard, spoke softly as she passed Archangel and walked to the table. She turned around and crossed her arms, not quite angry but not all too happy. "What we want to know...is why. Why do you pursue them? All the while putting other guardians at risk from their rage, that which you so eagerly and carelessly invoke." "No offense, but my motives are none of your concern. I do not come here and ask why your Hidden stalk the moon, nor why they capture Hive and Fallen alike. Nor do I question their intentions when I see your guardians desecrating Hive shrines, temples, and strongholds for the sake of gathering relics. Why? That is the question isn't it? You, of all people Ikora, have no grounds to question me." Archangel challenged her authority with every word he spoke, and he knew he was right. Ikora did not speak, though Cayde stepped up to fill her place. The exo walked to the center of the room where both Archangel and Ikora were standing. He spoke in a calm tone compared to his previous shouting. "The Vanguard have a duty to support the guardians in their endeavors. We do our best to uphold the mantle of authority here in the tower, as well as the city down below. Those who go against that authority do not tend to fare well on their own. We do what we do to ensure safety and order, and the defeat of the darkness. Why don't you see eye to eye with us?" Cayde questioned Archangel as he turned to stand beside Ikora. "Why don't you ask yourselves? As you well know, I pursue the 'Black Death' and its leader. What harm would it do to let me do so freely? What harm will it do when I kill the wizard that gives them orders? One of the biggest threats to humanity stalks the moon and yet you sit here and do nothing! I am perfectly capable of ending the lives of each and every Hive that marches under Thera's black banner." Archangel reasoned with them, as he soon devised that it was the only way to keep his luxury of leaving the tower. The three Vanguard mentors looked at each other, then slowly nodded one at a time. "Very well. We will not keep you from your business, nay, your vendetta with these monstrosities." Ikora announced after a few seconds, then stepped in close to Archangel. "However, you will not be allowed to go back to the moon alone. I am sending one of my Hidden, a warlock, as well as Commander Zavala's emissary with you. They will report back to us periodically about your progress. Be careful Archangel. You're young, and while you may possess much skill and intelligence, you are still naive. There is much to learn in this war against the darkness."
