The panic is over! No more payed mods!
The argument isn't quite over, however Valve has announced that they are canceling their payed mods on the Workshop!
So recently, Valve added a new system to their mod workshop. If you're unfamiliar with the modding scene, the Workshop is a piss poor attempt at creating a modding community on Steam.
The new system that has been introduced involves paying for mods. That means paying for content that the game developers didn't make.
For the most part, modding is free from monetization. Modders have always provided their mods for free. This little move by Valve changes things.
The Nexus has been the heart and soul of the modding community for a long time. That said, the Nexus has a well thought-out donation system. This, in contrast to what Valve has produced, offers mods for free whilst allowing the mod user to contribute to the modder whatever they choose. You can choose not to donate on Nexus. On the Workshop, just about every mod requires that some amount be payed for the mod. Some options ranging up to $100.00.
If the Workshop were to take a few pages from the Nexus's book, we could have seen a better system developed as a result.
Valve has received a lot of flak as a result of this. What could have been a good system if introduced correctly, has become a hot topic in the modding community.
Personally, I think that this will all fade away. The Workshop will continue to be sh*t and the nexus will remain the go-to source of modding for ages to come.

So, are there any modders out there who care as I do?
Give me your opinions.

Please, everyone. Can we talk about something important?
MAKE HALF-LIFE 3 ALREADY
I win.

Holy crap talk about short lived! I saw this and was disgusted! Totalbiscuit railed paid mods so hard, but he had some good points on the pros. I'm not a modder but I know you guys need your money too, and I have donated to the authors of my favorite mods for various games before, but lets keep it at that, optional.

Aye atleast valve listened to their community and checked themselves b4 they rekt themselves
-
That was quite short-lived. lol But all of this controversy did end up creating a comedic episode of Skyrim Mods Weekly on youtube, that series is the only reason I heard of this previously.
-
Why did they take it away?
-
Here.
-
They already got rid of it
-
I don't even use mods. Closest I've gotten to using a mod is installing the Hidden, but this was a dick move on Valve's part.

Sunufa...

You either die a hero, or you live long enough to become the enemy.
-
If you feel that strongly, don't charge for the stuff you make.
-
Why should anyone be paid for mods?Sure they put work into it,but they're basically profiting off someone else's creation.Mods should be a hobby and a learning experience for the creators of them, then they can go make their own game and profit off that.
