Hi all, I'm taking my time through the game, I'm currently just about to enter Drangleic Castle. I had decided to try a dark melee/hex kind of character (as I'd previously never tried hexes at all on the Xbox 360), but I'm finding that my damage output isn't great - pretty noticeable when trying to kill the dwarf chaps who guard the main door to the castle. I'm currently level 97 with VGR 15 END 15 VIT 6 ATN 20 STR 16 DEX 16 ADP 6 INT 28 FTH 28 I'm using Hexer's Hood with Lion Mage everything else (mostly) and have two main melee weapons - a Dark Shotel (+4) and a Dark Mace (+1). I understand that my weapons should be levelled up a bit more, but I wanted to see if my build is viable for PvE (not too bothered with PvP much) and the DLC areas before I commit many souls to levelling my gear further. I do use Hexes as well (with a Sunset Staff and Witchtree Bellvine) but I want to dish out a bit more melee damage if possible. I'm not well-read on various builds or advantages/disadvantages of weapons so any advice is welcome! Thanks.

  • Your build is extremely aggressive so far; you have low VGR and END for your level, but if that works for you, great :) Having said that, the soft cap on dark scaling is 30 INT and 30 FTH, so I'd focus more on the defensive stats once you reach those levels (unless there's a hex you want that requires more than 30 INT or FTH). Your ADP is also quite low. You've leveled ATN, so you'll get some agility from that, but if you find yourself getting hit mid-roll then I'd recommend leveling your ADP. 105 is the agility I aim for, as it provides the same i-frames as the fast roll from Dark Souls 1, but it's down to personal preference. To reference the Dark Souls 1 roll types, 88 agility = fat roll, 96 agility = medium roll, 105 agility = fast roll, and 114 agility = ninja flip. As for damage output, use the dark/resonant weapon buffs if you aren't already. They'll provide a substantial damage boost for tough areas. Plus, the Mace is an extremely good PvE weapon; focus on that more than the Shotel. As you already said in your post, make sure your weapons are upgraded, including your catalysts. Infuse them with dark too if you only cast hexes with them to add a bit more damage. Also, if you're using a dark infused weapon, don't bother equipping the Ring of Blades; you don't get the full effect unless your weapon isn't infused. Other than that, just make sure you're using the right weapon type for each enemy type (as a general rule, fleshy enemies are weaker to slash, whilst light armoured enemies are weaker to thrust, and heavy armour is weaker to strike). You may struggle in the DLC areas as they're not very magic-friendly. At the very least you might want to get the stat requirements for a strength weapon and upgrade it but leave it un-infused just in case. You've got a good PvE build here, and whilst you're a lower level than a majority of people approaching Drangleic Castle, you should be able to deal with any upcoming threats.
