Echoes Chapter 3 (Part I): The Search

"I never thought that I had an ideal team, but those two definitely got the job done. We were effective, lethal, and ruthless to any Hive we found. The only thing that we didn't count on, was what Thera did when she found us.." The trek to Outpost Ragnarok was a long and difficult one. William was right about one thing, the outpost was overrun. Scans showed that the Hive had set up defenses throughout the outpost, and an aerial insertion, even a stealth one, was not an option. The solution was for the team to be dropped off a few miles south of the outpost, behind the mountain range Montes Caucasus. Outpost Ragnarok was built into the mountain on the opposite side, and Archangel was hoping that they could stumble onto one of the tunnel networks and find their way in from there. "How much farther is it?" William rasped as he climbed onto the rocky ledge. The titan had been complaining for the past half hour. Archangel was beginning to become annoyed with it. Sera appeared over his shoulder to analyze the cliff face. "There is a cave up ahead that may be suitable to our needs. Rangefinder suggests...137 meters." The ghost chimed into the radio quietly. At this, William groaned obnoxiously. Archangel contemplated kicking him down the mountain, but decided against it. Instead, Elysia stepped up to give him the verbal equivalent. She gracefully floated down next to William and dragged him up onto the ledge. "Will you shut the hell up? For a titan, you moan and whine like a little girl. Keep complaining and I'll throw you back to the bottom of this mountain myself." She dropped him to the ground and floated up to where Archangel was standing. The hunter could bet on his life that she was smiling at him. William watched her in shock, then silently made his way up to them. Together, they climbed to the cave entrance above them, and surveyed the interior. "Looks deep and empty." Elysia pointed out as she walked inside. William followed her as Archangel turned to view the expanse of terrain behind them. The faint specks of tombships and ruined outposts were all that could be seen aside from the rocky mountains of the moon's destroyed surface. "You coming Arc?" William called back to him from inside the cave. He didn't reply, but turned away from the view and walked back to them. William watched him pass and said nothing, following close behind. They reached Elysia, who had found the end of the cave. "Dead end. No tunnel hatches, no nothing. Guess we gotta find a different cave." She sighed and sat down on a rock. William followed suit, kneeling down and checking his armor systems. Archangel's temper was about to flare when Sera materialized and floated over to a wall near the lowest part of the cave. "Don't be so sure," She said to the group, then scanned the wall. She turned back to them and would have grinned if she could have. "There's a tunnel network to Outpost Ragnarok behind this wall. We're in the right place."
