As I understand it George lucas holds the merchandise rights to star wars and that's where the money is for him. The ewoks are in there because they make great toys for kids in my opinion

They do but the ewoks make great cuddly toys too. After all can you think of any other reason for cute teddy bears that have no background in the films to suddenly show up in the final fight of a Sci fi epic?
