I can answer this one. Blasters use a power cell to charge a chamber filled with gas (of varying types). The charged gas is expelled out of the barrel via an electromagnetic field akin to a rail gun. The gas is considered a plasma at this point - a supercharged state of matter that burns everything it touches.
