Really? I had more trouble with Ruby. That being said my characters were nearly max level

The timer on Emerald always got me.

You had to get the journal from the ghost ship at the underwater reactor. Then take it to a guy in the town just outside midgar. He would give you the materia to get rid of the timer. At least I think that's what it was. After you beat emerald and ruby he would give you a golden chocobo, master summoning, and master magic materia
