Here's why you're (still) wrong about matchmaking, Bungie.

Edit: So this was posted pre-HoW. I've since played PoE and still believe optional matchmaking should be available for the higher difficulties. I was originally matched random with 2 people who weren't talking. We beat the level 28 and they sent me an invite. They'd been in a private party chat and so we ran the 32 and beat it. Then they had to log off. If we'd been matchmade for the level 32, there'd have been absolutely no difference. Some may argue that the system worked because we beat the 28 and moved on together, but there's a problem with that. While it was great to run another, if people have to leave or can't run more and no one is on your friends list to run, then you're stuck with no way to progress without having to find randoms on LFG sites or spamming players. Also, if you're attempting a run and one person has to leave, you could also be screwed. There's no reason in that situation to not be able to queue for a third person. There is no more chance of success on lfg sites vs in game matchmaking. The rest of my opinion can be read in my original post below. ------------------------------------------------------------------ I (and many others) have been playing your games since CE. When it was out, friends would come over to play, people would have lan parties and there was always someone to play with. The thing is, almost 15 years later, we're not all care free youth anymore. We have families, jobs, responsibilities and our friends have theirs. The ones who may still get online often have drastically different schedules and so a lot of us play more alone these days. That's a large reason why when the 360 released, it was such a hit. Suddenly as we were getting older and not hanging out with friends as much, there was a way to easily get online and find people to play with and we developed online friendships and relationships. I actually met my wife playing Perfect Dark and I've read threads of others who met their spouses on Live. Pretty much my friends list all came from Perfect Dark, Gears and Halo 3 because they all had really good matchmaking that encouraged communication and being social. Sure there were annoying bastards here and there, but overall it was a great experience. After Halo 3, I got to where with work, etc I didn't really have time to play much anymore. I even went without gold for a few years at one point. Then you teased Destiny. When it released I had a year subscription card to gold, I went and bought a new headset (hadn't used one in probably 4 years). Only thing was, the few friends who still played were all on XBone. No problem though. A few days of Destiny and everyone will have a ton of new friends, right? Here's a post I made of that day in another thread:
Day one. Got out headset and put it on for the first time since Halo 3. Launched destiny, played the first mission and went to the Tower. Silence. Went to the Cosmodrome and saw other Guardians running around. In silence. Went into the Crucible and played a couple matches. Wtf? More silence even in PvP? In a Bungie game ?? Took off headset for the next 6 months.
I get that there are sites like destinyLFG and it's great the community have filled that gap for you, but it's a bandaid and an extra step that shouldn't need to exist. By not including matchmaking because you think only pre-made fireteams capable of clearing content, you're stating that you think most of your community are useless assholes. It's actually sad the contempt you come across with to the average gamer these days. Destiny should be a social game, everything in it should build online relationships and encourage people to learn to work together. Instead it's a sterile, utilitarian and unbelievably antisocial world. I know you increased chat functionality in one of the patches, the problem is that 1) it's an opt in/out function and 2) you already conditioned people to playing without chat. I actually got into a match with a communicating team one day that invited me to a fireteam, from there I sent a couple friend requests and have since run my first raids and experienced that content because another part of your game has matchmaking. That's why it makes it so mind boggling that, if we're willing to take the chance of playing with randoms, that option isn't available to us. We don't need your kid gloves. We don't need to be protected from ourselves. If you feel so strongly that we might run across nasty, stupid or just bad people, why not build in a system to quickly mute and easily vote out of games? Halo 3 had that. How can you not have refined and improved that all these years later? It's time to make Destiny a living breathing world and like any other, there will be good and there will be bad, there will be successes and failures and we'll learn to work together or we'll learn to accept defeat. Through it all, we'll inevitably be better for what we bring to others and they bring to us. If you give us that chance.

  • If you dont join or form a group you are all excluding yourselves from parts of this game as it is designed around groups. Matchmaking is not needed when you have friends from your group playing all the time. Stop blaming bungie for your lack of effort. Get off your butts and make some new friends.

    • Bump! Great update--great post--we want optional mm, keep letting them know! Bungie should be thanking you for saving their asses. Comet already won't do as well as they'd hoped. Everyone remembers what E3 showed for Destiny vs what we got, people will remember that this E3 for Comet, thus the people they need to look to are those who are already in their base and to BUILD from there. They know what they need to do, but are hesitant for some silly reasons that are beyond me...

    • Yes i agree and bump this post, but like your other great post on this problem Bungie will take their bat and ball home and censor this post if it gets too popular so that it disappears into the forum nether regions to be hidden from view. Whats needed now is for everyone who likes this post to fill the forums with their own posts on this issue. If your for MATCHMAKING PROVE IT AND START PUTTING UP YOUR OWN POSTS TOO, I did and it too was pushed away to never be seen but united we may actually get Bungie to listen. Start posting guardians let them know we want it and wont be ignored.

            • You think matchmaking is the solution. Ok after reading your post I can see why. However, the world has moved on since Halo 3 and it ain't as pretty. They'll be trolls out there... Everyone who posts an anti - Matchmaking post is an elite bastard who doesn't understand our pain. Isn't that a bit unfair when their argument has just as much validity. Here's a couple of tales of my experience MM from the Heroic Weekly. Got to the boss on Winters Run, a fairly easy strike with void burn to boot. These guys I was MM with were pretty ok but one guy obviously thought he had an invincible buff on because he ran into the middle of the arena....and promptly died. Other guy decided he would run a suicide misson to rescue our fallen comrade... and then also died. There was no way in hell I could reach them in the middle of a group of adds with Arkon stomping around. So I ended up soloing it from that point on. That was the first tale. The second was much more horrible. I ended up MM to a duo, one of which was the biggest tit I ever had the misfortune of playing with. He clearly thought it was hilarious to run into a room full of adds on Will of Crota of all strikes. Kept dying so his mate and myself would have to revive him. I might have lived with that but nearly every time Tit's mate went to rescue him, he also died. So I had to keep clearing before I could revive them both. In all honesty I should have left but I had faith they would be a lot more alert when we got to Omnigul. I was wrong. It got worse. I ended up more or less soloing the boss fight because Tit and his friend had gotten themselves killed in the most awkward of places you could think of. Tit messaged me half way through which considering how busy I was didn't read until after I'd completed the strike. It read "hurry up" . I replied in case he hadn't noticed I more or less carried them both through it. He then called me a pussy and said they were having fun playing it their way, after all we were all 32's. I ended this brief exchange with that this "pussy" got nearly all the kills and didn't die once. Enjoy your strange coins, you didn't earn them. The point to all that. The MM lobby want to raid with the likes of that every week? What you all seem to forget is most of the regular raiders use LFG and will continue to do so if MM is implemented, optional or not. They want a team they can rely on, not a random idiot who can't walk up the stairs without summoning the Oversoul. Whether you like it or not the whole team needs a mic. How many will come equipped with one on a MM raid? Not as many as I would like that's for sure. You talk about MM as the only way to gain friends to play with. I never got one through a MM match or strike. They came from random Tower invites and LFG sites. There is more than one way to skin a cat as they say. Bite the bullet and try LFG or 100. Not every experience I had from using LFG was fruitful I will admit but even so I got a regular circle of friends to raid with out of it. I will end this monologue by saying I am not against MM as long as it's optional. However, be warned everything you wish won't turned out like you think it will.

                    • i would rather have ingame lfg over optional matchmaking, but both can work fine too. honestly, this is the one reason i--along with most, if not all, my friends--stopped playing months ago. ive only now picked it back up out of curiosity and still not that impressed. i will not buy the comet expansion or destiny 2 if they limit the social interaction. ill stick to playing warframe that actually has an ingame forum.
