So I always get a key but have no idea where the chests drop.

It's all pretty stupid... just more hamster food Bungie threw on the wheel to get us all to running it again. If you can't find the chest... just watch where the group goes... and if you still don't see it, then wait for a few guardians to go speeding off on their scooters. Don't follow them... just wait, they are coming back for a 2nd opening and if you watch them when they come back they will lead you right to the chest. They spawn in the same 4 or 5 locations so once you know where they are it will be easier.
