Part 18- The Prime
As Matthew and Saliks walked towards the giant junkyard, they heard a humming sound. Saliks held out his arm, stopping Mathew.
“What is it?” Matthew asked, looking around.
“I know that sound.” Saliks said, not able to put his finger on it.
A flash of moving metal could be seen, and Saliks shoved Matthew into a pile of rusted metal. The only thing keeping him from being cut to pieces by the edges of multiple sheets of Fallen metal was his scorched armor.
Saliks dove into another pile of metal. They waited as they saw three shanks pass by. Once they rounded a corner, both Matthew and Saliks got out of their piles of metal.
“Why can’t we let them see us?” Matthew whispered as they moved from cover to cover, dodging the gaze of shanks. “Won’t they let us go since we’re part of the House of Winter?”
“Didn’t you hear me before? Only the Kell and his guard are allowed here. If they see us, we’re done for.” Saliks almost hissed the last sentence.
They were nearly caught when Matthew kicked a piece of metal that rattled against another pile of metal. Three shanks immediately appeared. Before they could alert others, Saliks skewered two of them with a shock blade and shot the other with a shock pistol.
“Be careful of where you step.” Matthew told Saliks, who just rolled his beady black eyes.
Just halfway to the metal mountain, they came to big opening. They looked around to make sure it was clear and made a run for it. Just then, three more shanks rounded the corner to see them. Saliks shot two of the shanks down, but came to find the shock pistol’s shock core ran out of power. He threw a shock knife at the shank to take it down, but not fast enough for it to let out a loud shriek.
Seconds later, Matthew and Saliks were surrounded by at least a hundred shanks. All was still for a while. The shanks hummed, like a colony of angry metal bees. Suddenly, a reaver pit shank that rose above the rest let out a series of beeping.
Matthew wondered what it was telling the other shanks. Once it let out a screech, he found out. It was an order to a firing squad.
Saliks and Matthew immediately ran to cover as they were being shot at by a rain of arc energy. Saliks replaced the shock core of his pistol while Matthew cut down any shank that dared to get close. As soon as one of them popped their head out to take a look at the pack of shanks, they were immediately shot at by a volley of arc energy. Saliks started to blind fire the packs, taking down about ten of them, but his gun was soon shot out of his hand, and shot at until the shock core was hit, which caused it to explode.
Matthew suddenly had an idea.
“Hey Saliks, do you have any more shock cores to spare?” He asked over the beeping and humming of the shanks.
“I’ve only got one left.” He said, holding up a circular cartridge, glowing with arc energy.
“Throw it to me, quickly.” Matthew said, eyes locked on the shock core with a small frown.
Without asking why, Saliks tossed the shock core to Matthew before the Shanks could shoot it into pieces.
“Three seconds after I throw this, we run out and attack. It’s our only chance.” Matthew said, clutching the shock core.
“That’s crazy, but I guess you’re right.” Saliks said, shaking his head.
Matthew counted down from five in his head, then chucked the shock core out of cover, straight at the pack of shanks. It was immediately fired at, but by the time it exploded, it was already in the middle of the pack. It exploded three seconds after Matthew threw it, where the two of them jumped out of cover, on the offense now.
Matthew wielded the Xiphos in both hands, while Saliks held two shock blades in his top two hands, while his bottom two shot his shock pistols.
Little over sixty shanks were left by the time the two jumped out of cover, but that didn’t stop the pack of shanks from launching volleys of arc energy at them.
Saliks carved a wave of destruction while Matthew reflected shots and sliced through shanks, but it still wasn’t quite enough. Thirty still remained, but Matthew and Saliks were already almost exhausted. As Matthew reflected an arc bolt, he saw that the Xiphos was glowing. Time seemed to slow as a flaming shank fell his way.
He swung his sword to slash at the flaming ball of death heading his way, but as he did, white light followed the blade as it travelled through the air. A blast of white light cut through the air, travelling straight for the shanks.
As soon as the light touched the pack of shanks, they each individually exploded as they were cut clean through the middle. One by one, the shanks exploded until each of the explosion created one giant cloud of fire and destruction. Saliks and Matthew managed to get back into cover as the flames headed their way.
Once the chaos settled, Matthew looked down at his glass sword to find the glow was gone.
“What was that?” Saliks asked while they were clearing trash and metal from the mountain of scrapped Fallen technology.
“I don’t know. It just… happened.” Matthew said, heaving aside the rusty leg of a Fallen Walker.
“How are you certain that the Prime is here anyways?” Matthew boldly asked, questioning Saliks’ hunch.
“Simiks Prime is the only reason why the Kell wouldn’t allow entry to this place except to himself and his guard.” Saliks said, throwing away a broken thruster of a Pike.
They searched through piles and piles of metal until Matthew found something.
“Uh… Saliks… you might wanna see this.” Matthew said, pushing aside a heap of scrap metal to reveal the giant silver and purple eye of an even more giant servitor.
Part 18.5- The Reef
Variks and Petra Venj stood at the Awoken Queen’s feet.
“My Queen… Word has come finding that the Kell House Winter’s defeat… Is nigh. Rumor has it that the new Kell shall ascend, as you did with House Wolves, however… He is not Fallen…” Variks said, choosing his words carefully.
The Queen’s head slightly tilted, interested in this topic.
“Your brother’s crows have also reported that it has found the House of Winter’s Prime Servitor. What shall we do with this potential threat?” Petra said, hoping for more "fieldwork"
There was a moment of silence before the Queen finally spoke.
“Contact it. Learn of its intentions, and if they are hostile… Then destroy it.”
With that, both Variks and Petra bowed to the Awoken Queen before leaving the throne room. Things were about to get interesting.
