Bungie doesn't understand how firearms work.

Alright, I need to get this off my chest. Has anyone else noticed how absolutely stupid the design of many of the weapons in Destiny are? I mean who designed these things? They make no sense! The hand cannons and LMGs especially. The cylinder sits ABOVE the barrel, and the hammer sits ABOVE the cylinder on most of them. That just wouldn't work. There is no universe in which that works. And the belts on most of the LMGs feed into a chamber that is, again, physically placed ABOVE the barrel. It's just ridiculous. I mean, did nobody at Bungie look at these and think "yeah, that's just absurd..."? This is a REAL hand cannon. Note how the barrel, cylinder, and hammer are all perfectly aligned. This allows the weapon to function properly. http://i.imgur.com/vMEk2qQ.png And this is a common Destiny hand cannon. Note how the barrel sits aligned with the very bottom of the cylinder, and the hammer is aligned with the top. It makes no sense. (we won't even go into the fact that there is no way for the bullets to even leave the cylinder on most of these...) http://i.imgur.com/XBvpTOn.png And most Destiny revolvers are like this. http://img4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140624222458/destinypedia/images/d/d1/Regulator_Mk._43.jpg <an even worse offender considering how high the hammer sits, but I digress. It would be one thing if this were a case of simply "whoever designed these obviously has no clue..." but then there's Hawkmoon. Hawkmoon is how ALL of them should be. Hawkmoon's barrel, cylinder, and hammer are all properly aligned. Hawkmoon is actually a realistic weapon. A skilled gunsmith could probably make a fully functional Hawkmoon that you could hold and fire, and which looks nearly identical to the in-game version. http://i.imgur.com/Sdjmwmd.png Now, there ARE real-world revolvers that have barrels mounted in a fashion in which the round in the bottom of the cylinder is fired instead of the top. An example of this is the Mateba auto-revolver. Though you notice on the Mateba, the hammer is also mounted lower, because it HAS to be in order to strike the rounds themselves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHxo2cHsits There are others as well which don't have hammers at all, and use a firing pin system instead (sort of like a Glock), which would explain how the weapons in Destiny are able to work, though not int he case of a barrel being misaligned with the cylinder. This is also unlikely because in those instances, the hammer would be superfluous. It has no purpose... which is obviously not the case in Destiny, as all of the hand cannons have hammers. So the design of the hand cannons is completely borked in almost every instance except Hawkmoon... let's move on to LMGs. *sigh* http://i.imgur.com/E1l2LvT.png So... the belt feeds rounds into the chamber which sits... ABOVE the barrel? Come on, guys! And once again, there's ONE exotic that doesn't have this extreme design flaw. http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20150404021712/destinypedia/images/6/6e/Thunderlord.jpg Which means you KNOW how it's supposed to work, but 99% of them are designed in a way in which they are physically incapable of working... why? Maybe Scout Rifles will be better? I was surprised to find that the barrel and chamber on most of the scout rifles, auto rifles, and pulse rifles seem to be aligned relatively well. At least, they don't appear as though they'll suffer a critical malfunction the first time you attempt to fire them as the MGs and Hand Cannons do. But then I realized that the chamber, magazine, and the thumb-hole in the frame all seem to line up perfectly... meaning that the only way the rounds are making it to the chamber from the magazine is through your thumb. http://i.imgur.com/I04X3sc.png Am I nitpicking? Yup! Does it bother me? Yup! If you're going to design weapons... you need to either do it right, or not at all. There's no reason why a few weapons should be plausible (all gameplay mechanics aside), while the rest are so outlandishly stupid as to be visibly impossible to anyone paying attention. Get it together, Bungie! inb4 "space magic" means these all make sense... EDIT: You know what? I was wrong. About all of it. I'm pretty sure it all basically just works like this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGPIQ72-2Vg EDIT2: June 1st. I must say... this thread has gone on far longer than I expected it to. some may have figured it out from my replies to them or others throughout, but I never really took this topic seriously. The above was mostly meant as satire, while also inviting discussion as to the visual aspect of how the weapons in Destiny work. It has been quite entertaining, for both myself, and I'm sure quite a few others. There have been some great exchanges with others who had a sense of humor, as well as some who attempted to form an intellectual counter-argument and participate in debates. Others were less than intelligent, but I still enjoyed the replies all the same. To anyone reading this now with the intention of commenting along the lines of "it's just a game", or "calm down", or "you're an idiot", or "it's not real!" or whatever else... http://i.imgur.com/U7Ghu2s.gifv

  • You see after the golden age the design of how a gun works is completely different. We wouldn't understand. :)

    • Noticed all of this as well. Scout rifles in particular upset me. Also, notice how you rack the bolt every time you reload. Most times on real firearms, after emptying a magazine, the slide or bolt are automatically locked to the rear and just need to be released once a new mag is inserted, not racked like you do. I know the people who said "go back to cod" below are going to say it again but one instance in game where a crazy amount of detail has been put in is the modern warfare series. When reloading an m4, if the mag has been emptied the player character inserts a new one and hits the bolt release button on the side. If the mag has not been totally emptied, then when a new mag is inserted the bolt release is not pushed, because it's still forward, because there's still a round in the chamber.

      • The first time I saw the scout rifles I thought, "how in the world does the bullet get from the magazine to the chamber?" I mean, does the bullet have to change position to go into the chamber, meaning not just remain horizontal? How do they even load bullets into the mags of the scout rifles? Yes its a space video game with space magic, but really? The only plausible explanation, someone already mentioned, is the bullets are glimmer( not sure how that would work for lmgs, they physically have bullets). That would explain a lot, like why all the enemies have ammo we can use in our guns. But yes, the designs have some flaws because of how we see them with our current guns.

        • And summoning a golden gun that causes enemies to explode is normal and possible? It's just a game, and in the universe of Destiny there are a lot of unexplainable oddities. But that's the universe we play in, and frankly, the gun play and mechanics are fun so therefore I'm not bothered by my 13 round Fatebringer with an out of place barrel :)

        • Well the Thorn fires "bullets" that are larger then the gun itself, so I'm thinking... as long as it looks cool. It's all space magic.

          • So in a game that gravity is the same on every planet, a game that has double/triple jumps, golden guns, blade dancers, fist of panics, protective bubbles, space magic Nova bombs, space aliens, and tons of other shit happen, you choose guns as an unrealistic thing that bothers you? Haha very interesting. Go play battlefield

            • Hunters can jump twice while already in midair Warlocks can self revive rockets have 3 bullet magazine Revolvers have 13 shots It's a video game, it doesn't even matter. If they tried to make it more realistic, it would only negatively affect us. If that's your only complaint, then you don't really have one.

              • Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but the "bullets" aren't actually bullets. When reloading the hand cannon you are placing one large "bullet" into the cylinder. As I am an enthusiast when it comes to revolvers I have put a lot of thought into this. It bothered me to the point that I came up with my own explanation. Considering that some of the hand cannons fire far more rounds than any cylinder could possibly hold it stands to reason that the ammo these weapons use are not bullets at all. Instead, it's most likely some form of extremely dense matter or energy or whatever (I'm obviously not an expert in this area). The hammer doesn't have to align with a bullet because there isn't one. It's simply telling the cylinder that it's time to pop off a some of that dense energy/matter stuff. It could very well be that the barrel and everything around it are what creates the energy and the cylinder is just a disposable battery. Anyway, the point is, the cylinder obviously doesn't have bullets in it, so it's a moot point.

                  • I think that is because these guns don't shoot bullets. I think they shoot energy. The ammo packs we pick up are see through. And none of the guns magazines line up to anything. So that's why I think we shoot energy projectiles.

                      • You're trying to explain a futuristic technology with current technology. Seeing as how when you load a HC they don't shoot a tradition bullet in the sense you don't see bullets in the back of the cylinder. Also if you look at the bore of HCs you will see it's quite large. So how is a cylinder of say even the hawkmoons size holding 12 of those projectiles in a cylinder that size? Fact is its not holsing those bullets because it doesn't shoot bullets like our guns do. You're assuming it has a fire pin to knock on a trimmer when theirs no indicatuon of thay on the cylinders itself. I would assume it's rotating the cylinder and it would be an electronic firing pin. So when the hammer drops it sends an electrical pulse to fire the gun. As for the LMG, their are some top loaded machine guns like the bren. So what if the ammo that is going in the above the barrel is going straight down into the bolt? It seems silly but if they have access to materials for slick parts and very good lubricant to prevent jamming and say on some of the mags it has a an assisted electric motor to help load the rounds so its not purely the action pulling them in the chamber than it's entirely possible. Impracricle but then again we don't fully know how their technology works. As for thr scout rifle, idk.

                            • So many people don't get that there still needs to be set rules and things need to make sense even in fantasy and science fiction worlds. Good authors add concepts and mechanics onto the current reality to make the new one, not just throw out whatever physics or rules are annoying at that particular moment. OP is right.

You have a Traveler that feeds us this power that allows us to come back from the dead multiple times, we're talking about a Traveler that has the power to terraform Venus in to a habitable garden world, to me, those things are far more out there than certain weapons having odd mechanics, and that's fine, because this is a fantasy science-fiction universe, not a lot of it makes sense from a realistic point of view, because it's not supposed to.

                                      • I see where you're coming from and hey, gg showing off your gun knowledge but it all boils down to this: It's a game. Mind you, it's a game about Hunters, Titans and Warlocks (???) in space. Where a giant planet is heir savior. Where they're being attacked by aliens who have robots and where a pokeball brought you back to life. Technically, if they wanna make a giant butt that shoots lasers, they can do it and the butt doesn't even have to look realistically glossy and skin like? What I'm saying is that, yes, the guns are not exactly accurate but hey, we're talking about a game where there's a gun with a skull attached to its barrel and where bazookas come in all sizes and styles. It WONT be realistic or even close to the original and that's ok. Leave that to games like CoD where they absolutely claim their guns are like the real deal.
