You also have to remember the setting of the game itself; in this particular version of a futuristic, almost distopian world(s), there may not be the same technology that exists today. I haven't seen a firearm that resembles anything in destiny. Maybe they took inspiration from prototypes of weapons they looked into, or maybe existing ones that aren't the 1911, .44, .38, basically anything that you can relate to destiny. Any argument based on the asthetics of a weapon in the game instantaneously become invalid due to the setting in which the game is played. The spas in MW2 could shoot clear across a map, one shot somebody and get the guy behind them. Nobody complained about the mechanics of the gun, just that it was aggravating people. The "reality" of a game that was purely based on science fiction went out the window when it added an elemental damage to the weapons.

First off. The problem with the spas 12 was that it was a little too close to the reality of a shotgun and broke pretty much every other weapon in the game. The problems with the design of these guns is that they take so many cues from real guns, like detachable box magazines, red dot sights, exposed hammers so on and so forth. If they had just designed the guns to be futuristic, then these things wouldn't be necessary because they could put any interesting scifi mechanic they wanted into the guns. Instead they just made guns that were modern and some that were older, and made them operate basically the same, while making them simultaneously completely illogical.
