I've been playing Destiny a while, and I've been enjoying it more than almost any other game I play. I have loved the co-op aspect of raids. I've loved the crucible (despite the issues we all know about) for it's great variety of tactics and classes/loadouts. When Bungie added new content, I'd jump right in and eat it up. As background, I work 40+ hours most weeks, and I am no stranger to 60+ hour workweeks, even back to back. My home has kids, a wife, and multiple furry creatures of some variety or other. And yes, I do have and hang out with friends outside of the game, and I am sincerely enjoying the NHL playoffs with them.
It got to a point where I had to make a checklist to keep track of all the stuff I had or hadn't done and on which characters each week just because Destiny was one of many things going on. Trying to wrangle every exotic was certainly a fun task. The objective hunting nature in me made me a better player. Then one day I was running Crota with my 2 usual fire team members (3 manning raids when we knew each other and how we played was so chill), and I hit the last two exotics I needed back-to-back.
What next?
Well, I was free to find a new task, so I figured I'd chase grimoire a bit. My friends all knew I was just a holler away, and I turned into a ringer for any sticky situations my friends needed help with (and grimoire became an afterthought). Crota Hard Swordbearer? Sure, I don't need to make sure my warlock runs it instead, so I'll just bust out the hunter and whip him. Stuck at Templar? I'll hop in and solo the relic while y'all snipe away. IB team lost a guy? Sure, I love any excuse to shoot stuff.
Destiny got even better when I wasn't worried about loot anymore. All I did was screw around with all the friends and acquaintances I'd made, and I generally had a good time every night, regardless of what I ended up doing.
Months go by, and now HoW drops. PvE and PvP endgame... No raid though, so I should be able to power through it like I have with all the previous releases, right? Sweet mercy, no such luck! My regular crew and I downed PoE 32/34 on all our characters. We downed Skolas once in what turned out to be a 4?ish hour run. Our last guy was fading hard and was about to call it a night, and without a CP it would have been for no loot. But, we took him down after an hour of toying with strategies. It was fantastic! Next night, 2 of us and 2 different randoms run trials. I met two awesome people, and I went 9-1 and 9-0. Lighthouse is cool, but making new friends and playing amazing games was better. We had one game that started 0-3, went to 4-3, 4-4, and then match point winner-take-all. It was a freaking blast of a final round!
But, that's it. No second or third PoE 35. No third ToO. Life calls, and I couldn't get it all done in one week. 4 months ago, that would have cheesed me off. But this time, all I can do is congratulate Bungie on giving me so much to do, and even more new ways to enjoy my time with all the guardians out there. The loot will come, but the good times are already here.
The checklist is history. The loot will come when it gets here.
Bungie finally gave me more than I could chew in a week, and....
It.
Feels.
Great.
