A Week After the Battle of The Cosmodrome…
Ana Bray sat in the window of a ruined skyscraper in Old Moscow. A cool wind was whistling through the buildings, carrying last night’s snow. Ana had a scout rifle on her lap and was watching for enemies. She and the Pack were here on a mission to find and kill a Fallen Baron who was leading raids against recovery teams in the Cosmodrome. Ana was tired of running clean-up.
Saladin’s strike had broken the Fallen. The main forces of the Kings were hiding in the European Dead Zone while the Devils had fallen back to the blasted wastes of the African Desert. Everyone knew they were waiting for one of the other Fallen Houses to reinforce them, but the Wolves were gone after the Great Hunt and the Awoken Queen had let her wrath fall upon Winter in the past few years. No other major Fallen House was willing to risk the wrath of the Iron Banner. No help was coming for the Devils or the Kings.
So, Ana and her team were being sent across the Cosmodrome on daily bounties to kill any Fallen leaders still hiding there.
Ana heard a scuffling noise behind her and turned to see an exo rising from the ground. He was a dark green, painted in a camouflage pattern. His eyes glowed a fierce orange, as though he had fires burning inside him.
“Time to move?” He asked. Despite being entirely made out of metal, the exo’s voice was as smooth as silk.
“Not yet Phoenix. We’ll let everyone else wake up on their own time. We’ve been running pretty hard this week.” Ana said, turning back to the street. It had been eight days since the Battle of the Cosmodrome, and the Pack had completed seven bounties scattered across the Cosmodrome.
Phoenix-57 shrugged and took a seat on the floor next to Ana. He drew his handcannon from its harness and put it within easy reach. Ana taught all of her Pack to be constantly ready. They all wore their armor constantly, carried their guns constantly, and slept lightly.
An hour later, the rest of the Pack was up and ready to go after the Baron. Ana summoned her ghost and received the coordinates for the Baron’s last known position. The Pack quickly gathered up what little supplies they needed and left. They left the shelter of the ruin only to find a snowstorm raging outside. Even in her insulated armor, Ana could feel the cold.
“Guardians, be prepared for anything. This snow’s messing with motion trackers and visuals.” She cautioned her team. The rest of the Pack confirmed that they would be wary, and they continued on their hunt.
The Pack roamed through Old Moscow, tracking down the Baron as best they could. Unfortunately, the blizzard made travel slow and finding any trail was impossible. As night fell, the Pack still hadn’t found any trace of their quarry.
Frustrated and tired, Ana called a stop. Phoenix walked up to her while the rest of the Pack formed a loose circle and kept watch. Phoenix had been with Ana the longest and was her second-in-command. When she needed something done, he was always her first choice.
“What’s up Boss?” Phoenix questioned. “Are we calling it a day?”
Ana nodded. “We’ll clear out the building over there,” she pointed to the remains of a ten-story building. “After its safe, we’ll set up camp. Tell Sage she has first watch.”
Phoenix nodded and walked towards a figure standing sentry a dozen yards from Ana. He was breaking a path through a snow drift when he dropped suddenly. Ana ran over the the snow drift to find a chunk of the exo’s head was gone. The metal around the wound glowed white-hot and sparked with arc energy. Ana had seen too many wounds like this at the Gap. Only wire rifles did this kind of damage. Ana looked up and saw figures standing on top of a ruined parking garage. In the center of the group, holding a wire rifle with two arms and a shock blade in each of the other two, was their target. The Fallen Baron had found the Pack first.
