How it was explained to me was the Israelites were daft and stubborn and needed very strict rules so that they wouldn't do anything stupid.
Pork back then was "impure" because it was generally worm ridden because they didn't have good food handling techniques compares to today.
The Bible says that the old covenant, the rules set for the Israelites, no longer applies to us and we have a new covenant that Jesus made for us.

Edited by SSG ACM: 5/28/2015 6:12:19 PMIt wasn't because the Hebrews were stupid. It was because they didn't have the knowledge or the means to eat every animal without getting sick. It was the same purpose as to why they couldn't eat catfish. The Reason: They're scavengers.
