Faith based religion isn't my thing, but i'm curious. What's it like to have to see certain aspects of science as false due to your beliefs?

  • It's not that I see them as false, it's the way that science discredits a lot of things simply because the bible doesn't have a black and hite definition of who, what, where, when, and why for everything that science has a theory for.

  • It would be easier to answer specifically if you have a specific example.

If there was absolute proof of the big bang, then a lot more people would have different views and beliefs. But there is none. Simply evidence. And not very concrete evidence.

And not very concrete evidence.
As a future astrophysicist, this statement always winds me up. I am not jumping on either side of this debate, but there is plenty of concrete evidence for the big bang theory/model. A lot of it is advanced physics/mathematics, but it is there. Honestly try giving the Wikipedia page a read.

  • Unless it is observable, measurable, and repeatable it can only remain a theory

  •
Unless it is observable, measurable, and repeatable it can only remain a theory
That is the exact definition of a scientific theory. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_theory

  •
Unless it is observable, measurable, and repeatable it can only remain a theory
But it is. It's a scientific theory, meaning it has been measurable and repeatable. Honestly please look this stuff up before spouting stuff off like that.

  • Well the same could be said about your god, however saying this defeats the purpose of faith based religion.

  • Like a friend said previously in this thread: If I spend my whole life pursuing God and find out none of it was true when I die, then I wasted my life. But I did so pursuing love and a perfect heaven while being happy. If you spend you whole life disregarding the bible and Jesus as fiction and myth and die to find out it was all true, then you wasted the rest of your eternity.

  • But you will also have affected your life's decisions negatively - for example, if it turns out god isn't real then you've spent your life wrongly thinking being gay is wrong. You will have negatively impacted their lives by making it known that you think their love might be an abomination. Imagine what that feels like for them, and think for a moment that you have no proof that it's true.

  • But then it's all just a gamble.

  • A gamble that I feel like every odd in in my favor. A gamble in which I put forth all my chips with complete confidence.

  • Well then that is where the path diverges and we disagree, I wish you luck on your gamble and I hope for mine.

  • If your gamble pays off, what happens?

  • That's the beauty of it: something or nothing. It I cease to exist like how it was before I was even a sperm cell than so be it.
