Pahanin shifted slightly to a more comfortable position, while keeping his gaze -and 'Vice's sights- trained on the cavern entrance.
They had discovered this little cave a couple of weeks back and had instantly recognized its potential as a superior defensive position.
The mouth of the cave was narrow, too small to allow more than one person through at a time.
Once through the entrance, the cave opened considerably, but there was no cover to be had save for one large rock.
It was behind this rock that Pahanin now knelt, his attention focused on the mouth of the cave ahead of him.
Resting on the rock, with its sights zeroed on the entrance sat the enormous gatling gun Super Good Advice, Pahanin's best friend and constant companion.
To their back, the cave narrowed again before opening sharply into a secondary chamber. If an enemy managed to push them from the lone rock, they could still make a good stand from the cover granted by the rear half of the cave.
There was no other cover, and no other way in. With Vice's ability to spit solar rounds for sustained periods of time, it was an ideal position to sit and wait for Dredgen to come to them.
"How is Dredgen's progress, Ghost?" Pahanin asked. Dredgen had discovered the ghost's hack shortly after they had dodged that shot from his sniper rifle. It had only taken the skilled Hunter a couple of minutes to lock them out of his systems, but the ghost was still able to keep tabs on Dredgen's approximate location.
"He's still following our trail" the ghost replied, "his current pace puts him about five minutes out."
Pahanin nodded.
"Well then, we better roll out the welcome mat" 'Vice said with an eager glint to its voice. They each made their final preparations and waited for Dredgen's approach.
After a few minutes, Ghost chimed in Pahanin's head "Dredgen is closing within a kilometer, he should be showing up on our motion sensor soon."
Pahanin sank lower behind the rock, and sighted down 'Vice. Its reticule rested firmly in the center of the cave's entrance.
"Let's hose this guy" 'Vice whispered. Pahanin nodded softly and waited, motionless.
No one moved, no one spoke. Pahanin barely breathed. They all sat as still and silent as shadows.
The gloom in the cave began to deepen as the sun fell below the horizon.
Silently, patiently, Pahanin waited. There was no sound at all, and time itself seemed to slow.
Then, the motion sensor in Pahanin's helmet began to glow.
Faintly at first, but it gradually increased in intensity as something began to approach the cave.
Pahanin waited, motionless. He knew that if he could detect Dredgen, then Dredgen would be able to detect him. So he would lie in wait, silent, motionless, and hopefully undetected. Until it was too late.
Pahanin kept one eye on the motion sensor and one eye on the mouth of the cave. The motion sensor was glowing brilliantly now, and Dredgen was still creeping nearer to where they were.
The approaching Hunter was now close enough that he should have been able to see the entrance to the cave. Still, he came closer.
The motion sensor turned bright red as Dredgen closed within thirty feet. Pahanin set all of his focus on the cave's entrance, and waited.
The cave grew darker as night began to take hold. The faint blue light of the twilight outside was all that could be seen.
Suddenly that last bit of light went dark as a black silhouette appeared in the cave entrance. In its right hand, black against the darkness was Thorn.
In an instant, the silence was shattered and the dark walls of the cave glowed bright orange as 'Vice erupted in roar of solar energy.
