Fun fact: shotguns are actually only meant for one thing: opening doors -hence why an underslung shotgun is also called a masterkey.
Using a shotgun as a direct means of killing is actually a violation of the Law of War, and could lead to court martial and imprisonment.
So when you say that a shotgun is the best weapon for CQB, i don't know what the fuk you're talking about -and neither do you.

I spent over 3 years combined in iraq shotguns are most definetly used by point men in cqb enviroments and it is not illegal to kill someone with one otherwise a lot of soldiers would be in prison for it and the one you are talking about to open doors have special rounds in them to blow locks oh and americas police use them for building clearence in swat situations they are called combat shotguns and they are plated rounds

Just looked back over my sources again. You're right: The legality depends on the type of rounds used, and their effect on soft tissue. Plated rounds are legal, it is unjacketed lead bullets that are unlawful, as unjacketed shots expend or flatten upon penetration of the human body. This makes the bullets almost impossible to get out without causing further suffering or death by exsanguination. Other nations have declared the use of shotguns unlawful, however, as they provide no real means of military advantage while causing unnecessary suffering. Basically, what theyre saying is that you shouldn't have to use a shotgun when any other weapon works just fine without being as inhumane.

Overkill. Thats literally the only reason they are considered unlawful to use. If used to kill directly, yes they are unlawful. However, collateral damage is still feasible, so if someone happened to be standing too close to the door when you shot it, well thats not really your fault, is it.

It falls under "overkill," which is indeed a violation of the Law of War. The Law of War was created after the Geneva Convention, and governs what is considered to be unlawful during wartime, such as attacking unarmed civilians. Such acts are considered War Crimes.
