I think that ALL threads I've read on this topic just miss the point entirely.
I do think all weapons are fine, individually, but the problem comes from one weapon becoming dominant in terms of use.
I also think the limited map size on offer is part of the problem.
Sticking to Thorn in particular, this has a different mechanic than other weapons, the dot, whilst also having decent range (personally think all hand cannons have too high range). 'Nades and throwing knife aside, which are class specific, I can't think of another weapon that applies a dot.
We've all been in games where there are a high number of Thorn users, and it just becomes plain boring and it's this scenario that needs balancing, which is incredibly difficult. As you say, we don't use generic guns which is a good thing IMO.
This sort of issue had been a problem in FPS games since they began. Anyone else remember DoD snipers ruling. The fix was to limit the number allowed on each team....
