The servitor ball on the reef is actually a "skinned" servitor in that it's shell has been taken off. And if you look at the servitor in PoE it's actually hollow so variks is using the shell of the skinned servitor as a remote speaker.

I thought that ball in the Reef was the remains of the Gate lords eye that we fetched for the queen in the story mission.

When you kick it it makes noise so it's actually still a live servitor
