You have to be really precise with the kick/guard breaks. Try inputting the RB/RT command slightly later, I believe the analog stick has to be pushed right up as far as it'll go before it registers.

  • I've gotten it a little bit, but 9/10 times I fail. I do it on accident all the time, I was using a rapier and I back stepped into the abyss. On an unrelated note, do you have any fun playthrough ideas? I tried playing using only my fists, it didn't work out so well, it took an entire minuet to take down a hallow 1v1.

  • Try using a sword in your wrong hand. It never feels quite right for me and adds an odd challenge to it.

  • The Majestic Greatsword is actually stronger in the left hand. I really liked the DS1 version, so I've been trying to use it that way, but it's difficult to get used to.

  • Yeah that's the main problem with the thrusting and curved swords in the first game, it's cool that they've got a unique "kick" but it does hinder you in certain situations. If you wanted to do a fists playthrough, you could rush to the Path of the Dragon covenant and farm 30 dragon scales to get the Dragon Torso, that'll make fists viable, but it depends on if you're willing to farm the Drakes. SL1 playthroughs are fun if you haven't tried it, got mine to NG+5 but it's heavily reliant on pyromancy for fast boss killing. Other than that, pure sorcery/miracle playthroughs are interesting, or doing a playthrough with a weapon you've never used before.

  • I'm going to start a pyromancy build, know anywhere to get spells for that? I've never actually gotten past that stupid big butterfly or gone down from firelink shrine very far. I ran into an invader, it was really unfair, I almost won. He didn't seem to learn anything the 50 or so times I parried or back stabbed him. He panicked and started chucking toxic water balloons at me, I was so close! I thought it was leveled?

My favourite pyromancies are Great (Chaos) Fireball, Great Combustion, Power Within, and Black Flame. Fire Tempest is also really good against large enemies and bosses. The first step for pyromancies is Laurentius of the Great Swamp, who can be found down in The Depths. He gives you a pyromancy flame (unless you started as a pyromancer) and sells the lowest level pyromancies, as well as upgrading your pyromancy flame. Once you get your flame to +10, Quelana of Izalith will spawn in the Blighttown Swamp, provided you haven't killed the Bed of Chaos yet (highly unlikely you will have done seeing as it's a late game boss). She'll appear between the tunnel to Quelaag and the bonfire in the swamp, on a patch in the middle of the swamp. She sells the higher level pyromancies, like Great Combustion and Great Fireball. Power Within spawns in upper Blighttown, but is very situational. Black Flame can be found in the DLC if you have it. The invader you fought could have been using a modded character, unfortunately they're quite common. The PvP range is strange, it depends on the method of invasion. Typically, red invaders can invade anyone a higher level than them, and 10% of their level below them (e.g. a level 50 will be able to invade anyone level 45 or above). Blue invaders use a different formula, but can only invade guilty players. They can invade anyone 10 levels + 10% of their level above them, and anyone 50 levels + 20% of their level below them (e.g. a level 100 can invade guilty players between levels 30 - 120). If your invader was blue, they could have just been a much higher level.
