Elimination is basically practice for the Trials of Osiris, that's how I see it anyway.
But what's the point in playing Elimination to practice?
There's a few things that fails about Elimination:
1. It has matchmaking.
2. The map isn't the same as the map that's on the Trials of Osiris.
3. There's no feeling of pressure.
Point one:
By matchmaking, I mean that you get put into game with random players...So, what? Did Bungie think we'd all invite each other to a party and communicate? Obviously we don't do that, we jut jump around the map acting like it's a 3v3 match of Clash with a single life. (Yet people still dance on you when they win, no idea why, it's not much to celebrate)
It should be fire team only, so then both teams are aware that their opponents are talking strategies. Then there's a bit of tension in the game.
Point two:
The map shouldn't change. It's not training if the map changes. Hear me out. I'd rather practice on a map, with no pressure of losses being added to my card, losing boons and being the laughing stock of an enemy team that smashes me because I don't know the map as well.
Point Three:
I feel absolutely NO pressure while playing, like I said earlier, it feels like a 3v3 match of clash with one life.
I find myself jumping around in the centre of the map because, once again, there's no pressure, there's no punishment. Not like there really could be any punishment, but you get my point. Adding onto this point, and the point about elimination should be fire teams only, is that, you would not be doing the thing you're doing in Elimination, that'd you do in the Trials of Osiris.
Your teams communication would be different, your play style would be completely different, and once again, there's a punishment and there's a reward. Lose a game of the Trials of Osiris, that's one loss towards losing all your wins so far.

Lose a game in Elimination...Then, yeah, whatever we lost. Oh well. Not like It's going down on my card or anything.

I noticed it was more of a practice ground for trying out new hacks and cheats.
