Ether key randomly disappearing?

Just got done killing pack of wolves and I saw down in left corner it said I had ether key and when I got on my sparrow it disappeared and I wasn't able to get treasure? Can someone explain what the hell happened here?

You didn't die right after killing the wolves did you? That can cause it to disappear
