A guide to resolving SOME networking problems

If you're here, you've inevitably seen some of the Destiny error codes, and one or more of them is probably a frequent cause of stress. I was personally receiving a very consistent, very frequent occurrence of many of these codes, particularly Baboon. In the end, it turned out that I had packet loss, an average of between 7.5% and 10% with the Destiny servers. This was not the fault of Bungie, it's network administrator(s) or the services they use to host their game. I contribute the following as a Systems Administrator with approximately a decade of experience in network and systems administration that includes most major operating systems, most major brands of networking equipment and a dizzying array of applications and solutions. Bungie's support was kind enough to indicate to me that their data showed a good chance of packet loss on my connection. I verified it on my end with a little network magic and the help of Ping Plotter for Windows (freeware). Sure enough, almost immediately out of the gate I had 10%+ packet loss. I called my ISP to verify that my cable signals were within optimal parameters, and they were. I turned to my firewall's utilization logs and bandwidth monitors. I don't use the average device most of you are probably using, but this methodology will be common among most if not all of your routers and firewalls. For the purpose of this guide I will refer to Sophos UTM 9, but I will provide links and general guidelines on how you can replicate this solution at home. If you need assistance I'll cover that at the end. If you have questions I will answer them here or by email at destiny@duvrazh.net - I have set up a ticket-based support system to handle your requests. IMPLEMENTING QOS Step 1: Your devices needs a static IP. Click one of these links for a step-by-step on how to assign it a static address on your network. Please note these pages show how to reserve an address on your router, or assign it within your console. Pick whichever you feel most comfortable with. Just make sure that you're not assigning it the address it has, as that's part of your DHCP address pool. Due to the insane number of brands and models, I've found these two sites to assist you if you're unsure how to proceed. If you have trouble with this please open a ticket with me by emailing destiny@duvrazh.net. 3 Ways to Access a Router How to Login to a Wireless Router WAIT! Don't see Quality of Service? Perhaps your router can be flashed with custom DD-WRT firmware to give you this feature. Please check the DD-WRT Router Database to see if your model is supported. Step 3: It's time to enable QoS. This step is the real PITA because no one guide can help you do it - the process is different on most devices, however I haven't used a consumer-level device in years. Here are some recommended Google searches for most major brands, including the custom DD-WRT firmware. If you're still confused but ready to move forward, try this QoS Beginner's Guide. DD-WRT Apple Airport - sorry guys, your router doesn't have QoS features ASUS Belkin Buffalo Cisco DLink FRITZ!Box Linksys Netgear TP-LINK Trendnet Western Digital If you feel you're in over your head, or simply don't want to risk breaking your network. Have no fear. I freelance as a remote support administrator and can, at the time of my convenience, provide you with remote support using the highly encrypted and secure Teamviewer client. I am happy to offer this to my fellow players free of charge but please realize that you MUST open a ticket with me and it will have to be at a time of my convenience. I'm a Dad of Destiny and as such I have other real-life matters that must take priority. Footnote: This is by no means a complete guide, just a stepping stone to help you on your way. If you have questions please do not hesitate to post or open a ticket with me at destiny@duvrazh.net. I will respond.
Privacy Statement I have posted an email address, which may or may not be kosher with the Bungie/Destiny Forums ToS.
